Obituary of Brian Mayne
MAYNE, Brian
April 4, 1934 – July 17, 2022
In the early morning of Sunday, July 17, 2022, Brian Mayne passed away peacefully in the palliative care unit of the Regina Pasqua Hospital, at the age 88 years.
Brian was born in the United Church Hospital in Lamont, Alberta on April 4, 1934 – the fourth child of Phyllis and Reverend James Mayne. He was predeceased by his wife Mareata; his parents; sister Maureen; sister Cora and brother-in-law Gordon Illes. Brian is survived by his brother Donald (Helen); daughter Michelle Belisle (Jason); son Peter Mayne (Karen); four grandchildren: Dylan, Sean, Laura (Allen Berriault) and Juliana; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
As part of a Minister’s family, Brian spent his childhood always on the move, living in northern Alberta and in small towns across Saskatchewan including Caron, Morse, Zealandia, and Pense. After high school, he settled in Regina where he began a 43-year career at Radio Supply and Service Co, a locally owned electronics company. During his working years, he was an active member of the Regina District of the Purchasing Management Association of Canada (PMAC).
Aside from his family, Brian had two great passions: serving his church and seeing the world. Brian was a long-time member of the United Church. He met his wife Mareata in the “young peoples” group at church and the two became long-time members of St. James United Church in Regina. Brian served on the Church Board, sang in the choir, and for many years was Secretary-Treasurer of the United Church South Saskatchewan Hospital Chaplaincy.
Brian caught the travel bug early in life. As a young man, he explored far and wide from the seat of a Greyhound bus. As the years went on, Brian, Mareata and the two children went on epic summer car trips to every corner of North America. As the kids grew, the trips expanded to Hawaii, Europe, Trinidad and Tobago. After Mareata’s passing in 2016, Brian decided it was time to realize one last item on his bucket list: a cruise to the South Pacific, which included visiting his daughter Michelle in Fiji, and traveling with her and Jason to Australia.
Brian was a humble, quiet man, often content with his own company. In his last few years, he enjoyed simple pleasures such as completing the morning crossword puzzle in the newspaper, sitting with his cat Bubbles, playing solitaire on the computer, and visiting with old friends at church. His compassion and gentle humor will be missed by all who knew him.
There are many people who contributed to Brian’s care in his final year of life. The family would like to give special mention to the Palliative Care team at the Regina Pasqua Hospital (Unit 3A), and at Princess Villa Special Care Home – Brian’s last home before his passing. Your care and concern for Brian will always be remembered.
A Memorial Service for Brian will be held at St. James United Church, 4506 Sherwood Drive, Regina SK, S4R 4B4 on Sunday, August 7, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to St. James United Church in memory of Brian.
