It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of Anne Reid, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, on April 21, 2022.
Anne started life in Lennoxville, Quebec, and spent her early years in Montreal. She remembered fondly the four years she lived in Victoria B.C. when her father taught at Royal Roads College during the war.
Anne and Jerry (“the boy next door”) married in 1956 and started their family in Beaconsfield, Quebec. In 1966 they moved to Oakville, where they lived for the next 56 years.
Anne lived a full and busy life. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She was a consummate homemaker; her home was always open to family, friends and strays picked up along the way. She had a knack for building community, and loved hosting gatherings in her home. There were many dinner parties and countless celebrations. One highlight was the annual Christmas Carol party, begun in Beaconsfield, and eagerly anticipated for decades, the guest list growing and expanding each year. The number of friendships she formed and cultivated was astounding.
She enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as a teacher. In Montreal, Anne attended MacDonald College, where she received her teaching degree, and started her first job. After the move to Oakville, she requalified for an Ontario teacher’s certificate and taught kindergarten at St. Mildred’s Lightbourn School for close to 30 years. She made a lasting impression on many families, and was still hearing from and meeting appreciative students and parents as recently as last month.
Beyond her career, volunteer work was near and dear to Anne’s heart. She worked at the Red Feather Agency in Montreal, volunteered at her children’s schools, served as a Brownie leader, was active in her church, knit hats for preemies, and helped at the Kerr Street Mission.
Anne embraced the aspects of technology that suited her, learning to text in her 80’s so that she could communicate with her grandchildren. She downloaded e-books from the library, mastered online banking, emailed and FaceTimed friends and enjoyed playing word games. She was an exceptional and adventurous cook, and was always interested in new ingredients, recipes and foods. Right up to the end of her life she was cutting out recipes, sending some to grandchildren, and trying ideas they sent back to her.
Anne and Jerry were always a balanced and solid team, loving, supporting and working with each other right up until the end. Whether digging in the garden, making marmalade, planning holidays, reupholstering furniture, moving rocks (a LOT of rocks!),or exchanging ideas, they fit together like the pieces in the ever-present jigsaw puzzles at their cottage.
After recently losing her husband of 65 plus years of marriage (and a friendship longer than that), Anne did her best to carry on without him. Fate and circumstance had different plans however and she died at home, as was her wish, with family by her side.
Anne is survived by her daughter Sue and her children Emily (Thor), and Meredith, and son Rob (Sheri), and their children Jonathan (Mehria), Rebecca, Julia and Charlotte. She was predeceased by her sister Susan Whittall. Anne’s memory will live on through her family and friends, the recipes she shared, the projects she knit, and a bowl of homemade soup with lunch.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Cuthbert’s Church, the Kerr Street Mission or the Oakville Humane Society would be appreciated. A funeral will be held on Monday April 25 at 2:00 at St. Cuthbert’s Church in Oakville.
