In Celebration of
Anna Arthur (née Goulden)
July 26, 1942 –
January 9, 2022
It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Anna Arthur on Sunday, January 9, 2022. Anna suffered a long illness, which she bore with strength and dignity. She will be sorely missed.
Anna leaves behind her devoted husband of 60 years, Edward (Eddie), four daughters, Frances (Terry), Louise (Pete), Katherine (Darren), Charlotte, and seven grandchildren, Madelyn, Ryan, Julia, Sophia, Michela, Helen and Alexandra, who all loved her dearly. She was a funny, smart, witty, and fiercely loyal woman.
Anna was born in Manchester (UK) and trained as a nurse in Macclesfield, where she met and married Eddie, a civil engineer. They spent the next twenty years, with their growing family, living and working around the world – Argentina, South Africa, Spain, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia – before settling in Montreal, Canada.
Anna was a natural entrepreneur and passionate women’s advocate. While abroad, she ran several businesses, but it was in Canada that Anna focussed on her real passion: senior care. Anna owned a private seniors’ residence, which allowed her to advocate for the elderly. She became well known in business and government circles for her crusade against elder abuse.
Her work introduced her to the Montreal Council of Women, where she ultimately became President. She spent a great deal of time advocating to governments and participating in national conferences, all in an effort to advance women’s rights. An excellent role model and mentor, Anna raised four strong-willed daughters, while working full-time and volunteering on many community boards. She was a busy woman!
As Anna’s health deteriorated, she moved into St. Andrew’s Residential Centre. We would like to thank the St. Andrew’s team for their tireless dedication in providing Anna with loving care, up until her last breath.
Private family service on Friday, January 14, 2022, at the Mount Royal Chapel. In Anna’s memory, a donation to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Homes Foundation or a senior care organization of your choice would be appreciated.
