Alice Mae MacPherson Duxbury 1936 2022

It is with broken hearts that we
announce the passing of Alice Mae (MacPherson)
Duxbury,on December 15, 2022 at the Cumberland Regional
Health Care Centre with dear friends at her
side.
Alice was born a coal miner’s
daughter on May 21, 1936 to the late James Edward (Ted) MacPherson and
Mary (Dunn)MacPherson of Westville, N.S.
Alice spent her early years in
Westville, coming to Amherst in 1954 to attend St. Charles Commercial,
and graduating in 1955. Here Alice met her life-long friends, Grace
Marshall Gratto, also from Pictou County, and Audrey Damery Jones of
Amherst. Alice began working at the Canadian Imperial Bank of
Commerce in 1955, retiring from the Bank in
1991.
Alice met and married the love of her
life, J. Robert (Bob) Duxbury in 1958, spending a wonderful life
together for more than 62 years. Alice loved people, music, dancing,
curling, traveling and dressing up (at the Museum, Curling Club, Fire
Dept. bowling tournaments and curling trips to Summerside).
She was often called upon to make a pan of squares or cookies, which
earned her the name “Cookie Mama” to her many
friends.
Alice enjoyed bowling and her Thursday
morning Coffee Group, but loved curling. She, Bob, and
sister-in-law Lorraine Duxbury, traveled to many World Curling
Championships, including Scotland, Germany, Switzerland, the United
States and Canada. She was proud to be called a “Pond
Hopper”. She curled competitively with some local greats,
including Ron Cormier, Lawrence Carter and Barbara
Hood.
Alice traveled with Bob and Lorraine to
Ireland, Hawaii, Alaska, Barbados, Bermuda, and across Canada and the
U.S. She never got to travel to Australia – Bob’
dream trip.
Alice was an avid volunteer for most of
her life, assisting the Canadian Cancer Society, the Terry Fox Run,
events at the Amherst Fire Dept. Ladies’ Auxiliary, the
Amherst Curling Club, and the VON foot clinic. She won Provincial
Volunteer of the Year for the Town of Amherst in 1995, Volunteer for
the year in 1988 for the Canadian Cancer Society, in 1994 for Amherst
Business Ladies Curling Club, in 1995 for the Ladies’
Auxiliary Amherst Fire Dept, and in 1999 for Amherst Curling
Club.
Alice was blessed with many wonderful
friends, curling friends, bowling friends, Breakfast group, Commerce
Coffee group, birthday girls, and card/game group.
Alice was predeceased by her parents,
Ted and Mary MacPherson, her only sister Meri, nieces Laura Elvie and
Angela Gwen, children of her heart: James Paul Roy and Derrick
MacDonald, her friend Audrey Jones, sister-in-law Lorraine Duxbury and
her husband, Bob.
She is survived by many cousins in New
Glasgow area and across the country.
A special Thank You to the staff of the
CRHCC; especially to the doctors, nurses, cook and maintenance staff
in the Palliative and Emergency Departments. To her doctors: Dr.
Beltran, Dr. Bienkowski, Dr. Bobadilla and Palliative Care Dr. Short
