Scheduled to begin at 6 pm, Thursday, June 17th
It is with great sadness and much love that we announce the sudden passing of Roger Garfield McCabe at 68 years old, on February 15th, 2021. Roger resided in Amherst and was formerly a resident of Oxford. Born in Springhill, he was a son of the late Walter and Muriel (Moss) McCabe. He is survived by his wife, who he loved beyond words, the former Linda Allen; son, Wesley (Jamie) McCabe; daughters, Angela Ingraham; Ashley (Mike) Hudson; grandchildren, Darian (Cody) and Dyson McCabe; Ty (Katy) and Cohen Ingraham; Aubree and Cali Hudson; sister, Sharon Rankin. Roger was predeceased by his nephew, Trevor Rankin. Roger will be lovingly remembered for almost 37 years of service as a paramedic, starting out working for MacDiarmid’s and then finishing his career as a paramedic with EHS. He was described by many as their hero or angel, because he would go above and beyond to make sure his patients were comforted in hard times. His sense of humor eased any situation and he was famous for his “Dad jokes”. Roger also spread his love of helping others by becoming a member of the Oxford Volunteer Fire Department. He passed on his love for working in the health field to his son, Wes, and daughter Angela, both who were paramedics as well. Roger was commended for his work as Mine Rescue Draggerman, receiving a Medal of Bravery for his dedication to searching for and recovering miners in the Westray Mine Disaster. He spent over 35 years working at the Windsor Salt Mine. He was also a responder to the train derailment in Shubenacadie. Roger was a hard worker, who never sat still for long, and after he retired he returned to the work force as a Commissionaire. His bubbly personality and gift to gab made him an asset to any work place. Aside from being remembered for his incredible work as a medic, he will also never be forgotten for his love of his Harley. He enjoyed riding with his friend Deane, sharing Harley enthusiasm with his son, Wesley, and taking his wife, Linda, to the Warf Rat Rally’s in Digby. His Harley was his “baby” and he could often be found polishing the chrome. What he loved most about his Harley was being able to go on rides with his grandkids, who he thought the world of. Roger might have been known as a hero to many, but his most important title was “Grampy”. Roger was their number one fan, going to his grandaughters’ cheer competitions and plays, and being the most vocal fan in the stands at his grandsons’ hockey games. He was well known as the most passionate grandfather in the arena, and may have been a little too passionate at times, finding himself in colourful conversations with the refs. No one can deny that he had his grandkids’ backs and that he was proud beyond words of all six of them. Roger will leave his family with many memories . . . and a lot of stuff . . . . but most importantly, he will leave them with the lesson that we must treat people with compassion and respect, that a corny joke can make things better, and that when things get tough, scratch your head and say “It’s a piece of cake”. The family would like to send a special thank you to the paramedics, nurses at Cumberland Regional Health Care, and Dr. Ferguson, who were on Roger’s call, for the care and compassion they showed. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Cananda. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, February 18 in MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, 5075 Main Street, Oxford (902-447-2930). A private funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, February 19. To view a livestream of the funeral, click on the link above at the time of the service.
