PEEL Margaret Christina December 25 2021

It is with sadness that our family announces the death of our mother Margaret Peel on December 25, 2021 at the age of 103. Margaret is survived by her son Brian Peel of Edmonton and her daughter Alison Nussbaumer (Dave) of Burnaby; nieces Drs Lesa and Merrilee Fullerton of Kanata, Anne, Susan and Linda Fuller- ton of Toronto, Candace Hawkey of Bellevue WA and Melody Johnson of Kalispell MT; nephew Dr James Fullerton of Ottawa; sister-in-law Louisa Fuller- ton of Kanata; and many grand nephews and nieces and two great grand nieces.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband of 46 years Bruce Peel, her siblings Mary Fullerton of Regina, James Fullerton of Kanata, Edward Fullerton of Toronto and Dr Kathleen Fullerton of Toronto and her sisters-in-law Kay Fuller- ton of Toronto, Doreen Hawkey of Bellevue WA and Wilma Peel of Edmonton.
Margaret was born in Coleraine, Northern Ireland on April 21, 1918 and grew up on Ballyness farm just outside Bushmills in County Antrim. She was the eldest child of James and Elizabeth (nee McConaghy) Fullerton. Her family emigrated to Canada in 1929 and settled in Regina where she attended Lakeview High School and Normal School. Margaret taught school (all grades) in one-room schools in central and south Saskatchewan and later became a librarian at Connaught Public Library in Regina. She loved reading and had a genius for the English language and was particularly fond of Dickens. Margaret painstakingly edited her husband’s books, including the monumental A Bibliography of the Prairie Provinces to 1953. In the late 1960s she was the one-person jury for the Governor General’s Award for Fiction. She read the Edmonton Journal cover-to- cover daily until she was 98.
Margaret was a believer in and follower of Jesus the risen Son of God. Her faith in the Lord and His word and His presence through the Holy Spirit sustained her through all of the challenges and trials she faced during her long life. Margaret is now at eternal rest in peace and great joy with her Lord and Saviour, having repented and trusted Jesus to save her from her sins, and having given her life over to Him. She has experienced the scriptural yearning: We are confident… well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:8)
The family wishes to thank the medical staff, caregivers and other employees at The Good Samaritan Southgate Care Centre where Margaret lived for the last four years. The love and care they gave to our mother is deeply appreciated and will never be forgotten. A graveside memorial for close family and friends will take place at Margaret’s interment on Tuesday, January 4 at 11 am at South Haven Cemetery in Edmonton. A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held in the new year.
