Obituary
PATRICIA H. BROWN, R.N.
Surrounded by her loving husband and family, Pat Brown passed away peacefully at her home in Chamcook, NB, on July 24, 2021. Born in Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland on April 22, 1938, she was the daughter of Marion and George Nisbet, who emigrated from Scotland 73 years ago to live in St. Andrews, NB, coming to Canada on board the Cunard ship “Aquitania” which docked at Pier One in Halifax, NS. Throughout her life, Pat continued to celebrate her Scottish heritage and was an active member of Greenock Presbyterian Church in St. Andrews.
Pat is survived by her husband of nearly 63 years, Douglas F. Brown, daughters Heather Brown Bartlett (David), Holly O’Rourke (Jeff), Heidi Brown, five grandchildren-Sarah, Carolyn, Cameron, Scott, and Charlotte, two great grandchildren-Bridget and Kiel, several nieces and nephews, and Scottish cousins. She was predeceased by her brother Hamish Nisbet (Bertha).
Growing up in St. Andrews, Pat’s life was full of fun and adventure. She enjoyed figure skating and a special memory of skating with Barbara Ann Scott in practice in 1949. Pat’s life was also filled with the joy of music as she sang in music festivals, and later in choirs including Cantus, The Shiretown Singers, and Voices of the Bay. On Sundays, she could be found dashing from one church service to another as she directed choirs and shared her passion for choral music.
After Pat graduated from Vincent Massey High School, she started her nursing training and career at the Saint John General Hospital School of Nursing which she later completed at Dawson College, Montreal, QC. She lived in Germany for seven years and enjoyed travelling though Europe during that time, while also working as a maternity nurse. A caring and dedicated maternity nurse, Pat worked in many other hospitals and a private clinic over the years, most recently on the labour and delivery floor at Charlotte County Hospital before she retired in 2000. She loved being a registered nurse.
In retirement Pat’s life’s adventures continued when she and her husband fulfilled their dream and sailed to the Bahamas twice on their 35-foot Danish Cutter, “Beltane”. During their intrepid Caribbean travels, they made many new friends and shared special memories. For over 60 years, they also enjoyed cruising and sailing up and down the Saint John River and the Fundy coast.
When she wasn’t sailing or singing, “gran” could be found knitting countless pairs of socks treasured by her grandchildren. Pat had a great sense of humour and loved a good laugh. She celebrated a wonderful life with her husband, family, and dear friends who will miss her very much.
Donations to a charity of the donor’s choice in Pat’s memory would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences may be sent to www.fundyfuneralhome.com. A memorial service will be held in St. Andrews, NB at a later date.
