With great sadness, we announce the death of Normand Carrière at the age of 65 years, on January 27, 2021, at Sensenbrenner Hospital. Norm was a charismatic and wonderful people person who was able to strike up a conversation with everyone he met, often making a simple outing turn into an afternoon affair. Born and raised in Kapuskasing, Norm worked as a papermaker at Spruce Falls for 40 years, taking a much-deserved retirement in 2016. He had a great sense of humour, and loved to tell jokes and make people laugh, which endeared him to many. He had an incredible memory and could remember people’s names and notable dates, which allowed him to recount funny stories or special moments. He enjoyed helping others and was an active volunteer with the Kapuskasing Food Bank, the Rotary Club of Kapuskasing, and the annual fishing derby, to name a few. In 2019, Norm humbly received the “Inclusive Community Award” presented by the North East Association for Community Living, for his significant contribution to the vision of community living. Norm will always be remembered as a kind and gentle man with a heart of gold.
In his spare time, Norm enjoyed a variety of hobbies and activities. He was an avid reader and enjoyed an array of books. He had a passion for golf, whether he played on the course or watched the various tournaments and championships on the PGA channel. He enjoyed bowling for many years and was a member of the men’s bowling league. Norm also loved getting away whether it be to the camper, visiting family or going on a warm trip down south. He enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities such as fishing, four-wheeling and snowmobiling. Norm was a devoted family man, a loving husband, father and grandfather. His greatest joy, first and foremost, was spending time with loved ones.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Denise; his children: Ian Tremblay-Carrière (Samantha Mitchell) of Gatineau, Sasha Tremblay-Carrière (Andrew Won) of Orleans, and Stephan Bisson-Brodie (Cassandra) of Kapuskasing; his grand-children whom he absolutely adored: Jacob, Jayden, Maverick and Brixton; and his siblings: Gilberte Richard of Rockland, Lionel (Anne Dutil) of Lauzon, QC, Robert (Sandra Forrester) of Chatham, Denise Carrière of Cochrane, Roger (Gisèle Bégin) of Hearst, René (Mary-Anne Belyea) of Kingston, and Raymond Carrière of Guelph; as well as one sister-in-law: Doreen Perron of Timmins. He was predeceased by his parents, Alcide and Priscilla; his step-father, Eddy Arseneault; one brother, Jean-Guy; and two brothers-in-law: Bill Honey and Jules Richard.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 4, details to follow. As expressions of sympathy, donations to Diabetes Canada or the Lung Association would be greatly appreciated.
C’est avec grande tristesse que nous annonçons le décès de Normand Carrière à l’âge de 65 ans, le 27 janvier 2021, à l’Hôpital Sensenbrenner. Norm était un homme charismatique et un merveilleux type très sociable, qui avait la capacité d’entamer une conversation avec toutes les gens qu’il croisait, ce qui transformait souvent une simple sortie en une rencontre de tout un après-midi. Norm est né et a été élevé à Kapuskasing, où il a travaillé comme papetier pendant 40 ans chez Spruce Falls, prenant une retraite bien méritée en 2016. Il avait un grand sens de l’humour, et aimait à conter des blagues et faire rire les gens, ce qui faisait que de nombreuses personnes l’aimaient davantage. Il possédait une mémoire incroyable et pouvait se rappeler les noms des gens et des dates importantes, lui permettant ainsi de raconter des histoires drôles ou des moments particuliers. Il aimait aider les autres et était un bénévole très engagé auprès de la Banque alimentaire de Kapuskasing, le club Rotary de Kapuskasing, et le tournoi de pêche annuel, pour n’en nommer que quelques-uns. En 2019, Norm a reçu – en toute humilité – le prix de « communauté englobante », présenté par l’Association pour l’intégration communautaire du Nord-Est, en reconnaissance de son importante contribution à la vision d’intégration communautaire. On se souviendra toujours de Norm comme homme gentil et bienveillant, au cœur d’or.
Dans ses temps de loisir, Norm prenait plaisir dans divers passe-temps et activités. Il était un lecteur avide qui savourait un éventail de livres. Il était passionné du golf, que ce soit sur le terrain ou à regarder les nombreux tournois et championnats présentés au canal PGA. Il a joué aux quilles pendant plusieurs années et fut membre de la ligue masculine. Norm aimait également s’échapper du quotidien pour aller camper, visiter sa famille ou faire un voyage aux pays chauds. Il prenait plaisir à pratiquer plusieurs activités en plein air, dont la pêche, les randonnées en quadricycle et en motoneige. Norm était un homme dévoué à sa famille, un époux, père et grand-père aimant. Sa plus grande joie, d’abord et avant tout, était de passer du temps avec ses proches.
Le manqueront grandement son épouse, Denise; ses enfants : Ian Tremblay-Carrière (Samantha Mitchell) de Gatineau, Sasha Tremblay-Carrière (Andrew Won) d’Orléans, et Stephan Bisson-Brodie (Cassandra) de Kapuskasing; ses petits-enfants qu’il adorait : Jacob, Jayden, Maverick et Brixton; en plus de ses frères et sœurs : Gilberte Richard de Rockland, Lionel (Anne Dutil) de Lauzon, QC, Robert (Sandra Forrester) de Chatham, Denise Carrière de Cochrane, Roger (Gisèle Bégin) de Hearst, René (Mary-Anne Belyea) de Kingston, et Raymond Carrière de Guelph; ainsi qu’une belle-sœur, Doreen Perron de Timmins. Il fut prédécédé par ses parents, Alcide et Priscilla; son beau-père, Eddy Arseneault; un frère, Jean-Guy; et deux beaux-frères : Bill Honey et Jules Richard.
