Death Notice
Hankinson, Muriel Cox (nee Staden) – age 100, passed away on Thursday, June 24 with family by her side. Beloved wife of Rev. Canon Michael Hankinson (2020) and loving mother of Chris (Gail) of Dorchester. Predeceased by her parents Frank and Bertha Staden. Remembered by cousins Barbara Sutton (Ted 2019), Peter and Beryl Cox and Fenn and Norma Hankinson, the Sutton family, relatives in England and many dear friends in the Diocese of Algoma.
Raised in Derbyshire, England, Muriel had a zest for life that included amateur theatrics and a passion for the church which she sustained all her life. Her early career was with the civil service but something called to her and Muriel travelled to Canada in the early 1950’s. After a brief time working in a department store in Toronto, she became a “vanner” teaching Sunday school to children living on remote farms in Saskatchewan. When cold weather came, her winter job was school secretary and it was there that she met the love of her life (65 years), Michael. They married in 1955 in Regina and welcomed Christopher in 1961. During their partnership they ministered together in parishes across the dioceses of Qu’Appelle and Algoma. Muriel was a life member of the WA and the Anglican Church Women. Muriel and Michael spent their holidays camping across Canada and in retirement took up curling and enjoyed travelling to England and Scotland. In their latter years they moved south to be closer to family.
The family wishes to thank those in Sudbury, Dorchester and London involved in Muriel’s care and support over the years. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses, PSWs and all the staff in the Cardiac and Palliative Care units at University Hospital. Also, a very special thank you to The Rev. Lyn Fisher.
Cremation has taken place.
