Obituary of Mildred Glick
Mildred Francis Glick (nee Alger) was greeted by her Lord on Dec. 11th, 2021 at Laurel Heights Retirement Home in Edmonton with her husband, Isaac, and family by her side. Mildred (Millie) was born on October 11th, 1930 to John Harvey Alger and Anna Catherine Hostetter near Broadway, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley. She was the second youngest of 7 siblings with four older brothers and two sisters.
At Eastern Mennonite College, Millie met Isaac (Ike), and they were married on July 16th, 1952 at the Alger home farm in Rockingham County, Virginia. Their first son, John Edgar, was born in Virginia. Millie and Ike headed to northern Alberta in 1955 to work in Volunteer Service sponsored by the Mennonite Mission Board, initially committing for 2 years. Both Millie and Ike fell in love with the people and the community. They became Canadian citizens on March 19,1964 and continued to live in Alberta, where their youngest four children, Jan, Eric, James and Pat, were born. Millie, along with Isaac, took risks in many community service adventures, with Christ as their guide.
Millie is predeceased by her parents, John and Anna Alger, her brothers, John Paul (Retha), Robert (Ruth), Ralph, Nelson and sister Catherine (Lee). Mourning Mildred’s passing are her younger sister, Nell, sister-in-law, Ruth K.; her children, John (Sally), Jan (Brent), Eric, James (Darla), Pat (Jim) and But (Hong); grandchildren, David (Sarah), Beth (Jesse), Tara (Chris), Trevor (Raelene), Tyler (Laura), Levi, Courtney and Mateo; and great-grandchildren Jonah, Jedediah, Chisum, and Lillian Mae; her nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Millie’s kind, caring, fun-loving spirit attracted others to join her family, and, as a result, she has been “honourary” Mom to many adult children over the years.
Millie was known best of all as a sister, a life-long partner to Isaac, a Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandma, Aunt and friend. She had a keen eye, seeing from her heart. Her writing and her friendships are testament to this gift. Mom wrote of herself “solitude was her feast”. One of her favourite Scriptures, Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God”, also speaks to her need for quiet spaces to listen and notice. Her heart was for people and nature. No doubt these quiet times also gave space for her to create and pen her poetry and stories.
A celebration of Millie’s life will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at Lendrum Mennonite Church 11210 59 Ave NW, Edmonton. If you plan to attend, please register by emailing Millie1930@shaw.ca. The funeral service will be following the Restriction Exemption Program. Those attending will need to provide proof of full vaccination (two weeks prior to funeral date) or a negative covid test (less than 72 hours prior to funeral date).
