Obituary of Michael Johnston
Michael Johnston
May 24, 1940 – July 20, 2021
Michael died peacefully at Lakeridge Health Oshawa following a recent series of health setbacks.
He was the son of the late Robert and Annie Johnston and brother to Karen Beres (Martin), the late Bruce and James. He was the adoring husband of the late Carol and the proud father of Laura Connors (Brad) and Vince (Tracey Wood). He was the even prouder papa of Emma Gray (Shaun), Annie, Ally and Ethan. He was thrilled to become the great-grandfather to Emma’s daughter, Ellie, last year.
Michael was born and raised in Toronto and earned his BA from Victoria University at the University of Toronto. He and Carol moved to Oshawa in the early ‘60’s when Michael began his career with “Generous Motors” in labour relations and personnel. After battling with alcoholism for many years, the Motors parted ways with him. Michael then dedicated himself to sobriety and began a new career as a custodian with the Durham School Board. Just prior to his retirement at the age of 70, Carol died suddenly. It is fair to say that Carol’s death was a devastating setback for him and he retreated from connecting with anyone outside a small group. However, his strength and resilience shone through and he maintained his sobriety up to his death.
The family will be holding a private service in the future. The family wishes to encourage everyone to maintain connections to family and friends throughout your life. Without those connections, one is not truly living.
