Memorial Donation
Mary Viola of River Bourgeois died peacefully with family at her side on February 6th 2021 at her residence in St. Anne’s nursing home, Arichat. She was born on January 9th 1923 to the late Henry U and Charlotte Ann Sampson.
Viola is survived by her children, Clifford (Anne Louise), Genevieve (Norman), Ervin (Janice), Melvin (Denise); son in law, George; grandchildren, Ian, Blane, Duncan, Maggie, Glen, Martina, Corey, Melody, Kelly, Chris, Molly, David, Anne, Edward, Marc, Andrea, Scott, Joey, Matthew, Randy; 29 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Roderick; son, Emile; daughter, Yvonne; granddaughter, Mary Ellen and sister Cecilia Touesnard.
If wealth could be measured in terms of good friends and family, then Viola was a very rich person. She loved music, cards, bingo and any event which involved her family and friends. She never forgot any of her kids and grandchildren’s birthdays and dutifully sent cards to help celebrate the event.
She will be perhaps remembered best, not only for her kindness and generosity, but also for her line “ well you have lotsa time” when visitors were preparing to depart. She meant it, especially if the company was willing to play cards all day and into the wee hours of the morning.
She loved to laugh and did so quite heartily with tears running down her face at anyone telling a funny story or doing some silly antics. As such the “ trailer park boys” and “ Mrs Brown’s Boys” were her favourite shows with bubbles being her favourite character.
Underneath all of this, was her strong faith, which helped to sustain her. She remained a devout Christian throughout her life and it gave her strength in times when the rest of the world seemed to be failing her.
A special debt of gratitude is owed to the staff and medical personnel at the St. Anne’s Community Centre for their excellent care and attention. From the first day, until the last, the care she received was always second to none!
As was already mentioned, she had many friends, but her dearest friends were Suzanne Mac Intyre and Carol Anne Fownes who phoned or visited regularly and also Christian who called her everyday and more often than not, twice a day with an update on the River Bourgeois news. As a result we were always surprised at how behind the times we were on what was happening around us when we visited. She will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be at the River Bourgeois Funeral home Thursday February 11th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm; all Covid 19 restrictions will apply. Funeral mass will be at 11 am at Saint John The Baptist Catholic Church, River Bourgeois Friday February 12th and will be by invitation only; Father John Yake officiating. Burial will take place after the funeral mass in the parish cemetery.
Donations in memory of Viola may be made to St. Anne’s community nursing home Arichat. Arrangements are under the direction of Green’s Funeral Home, 507 Bernard St., Port Hawkesbury.
