Mary Nixon
1921 – 2021
The Nixon family wish to share the news of the passing of their wonderful mother, Mary, in her 100th year. Her infectious smile and joyful personality endeared her to so many. She was born in Espanola, the youngest child of John and Christina Placken. Mary was predeceased by her siblings, Roger Placken (Nora), Stan Placken (Jean), Julie Hoddy (Tom), Rose Baldry (Carson), Jean Konarek and May Carruthers (Bill). She developed a special bond with her nieces and nephews which brought immense joy throughout her life.
Mary was an active member of the CWL for over sixty years and served with the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary. Her primary focus however, was her family. She was predeceased by her husband Harold, son Dan (Pat) and grandson Dana. Her remaining children, Lynda (Des, predeceased), Larry (Jane), Marilee (Michael) and Bob are left with incredible memories of a life well lived. Eight grandchildren, Derek, Tanya, Shera, Steve, Cory, Jason, Gareth and Christina learned the true meaning of love and generosity from their Baba that will guide them throughout their lives. Her family has expanded to include great grandchildren, Patrick, Brodi, Anique, Rae, Jada, Luke, Grady, Damon, Xander and her great-great grandchildren, Lina and Pierce.
Mary lived life to the fullest. She loved to travel with her faithful companions Lynda and Marilee. Her boundless energy invited adventure to Vegas at 80, Paris at 90, Australia, Florida, etc. There wasn’t a restaurant she didn’t like!
Mary settled easily into her new life at Manitoulin Lodge in Gore Bay during the summer of 2016. She endeared herself to so many and appreciated the kindness of staff and residents. For this we are thankful. A special thanks to the town of Espanola for sharing so many wonderful moments with our amazing mother. She had enough love for us all.
In Mary’s memory if you wish, a donation can be made to the Espanola Hospital Foundation. A memorial mass will be celebrated at a later date. Arrangements will be made by Bourcier Funeral Home.
