With profound sadness, the family of Marlene Jeanette Horne (nee Shepherd) announce her passing in Burlington on August 16, 2021 at the age of 80.
Survived by her brother Macks Shepherd (Vicki), son Paul Horne (Dr. Lisa Popp), daughter Brenda Brown (David) and sister-in-law Susan Shepherd. Marlene loved her whole family and adored her grandchildren Jaron, Avram and Natania Horne and Sophie, Ethan and Melissa Brown.
Predeceased by her husband W. Allan Horne, parents Erwin and Gertie Shepherd, brother W.D. (Bob) Shepherd and in-laws W. Emory Horne C.A. and Goldie Lemon Horne.
Upon graduation from McMaster University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, Marlene was awarded the McMaster Alumni Scholarship for being the top student on the Dean’s Honour List in the School of Adult Education. She held a Master of Education degree from Brock University, was a graduate of Hamilton Teachers’ College and taught for the Halton District School Board for 36 years.
Marlene was a member of East Plains United Church, Burlington Chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women, Central Burlington Women’s Probus Club, the Retired Women Teacher’s Organization of Burlington and the Retired Teachers of Ontario (Halton Chapter).
Marlene enjoyed golfing, all forms of music and was an avid photographer. She was born in the same bedroom as her Father and Grandfather in the Shepherd Family ancestral farmhouse in Burlington. Four generations of her family are buried in the Appleby Pioneer Cemetery. It is through her Mother’s lineage that Marlene is descended from Lord and Lady Clayton of Cambridge, England.
Visitation at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stoplight north of QEW), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333), on Friday, August 20, 2021 from 9:30 a.m. until the Funeral Service at 10:30 a.m. Interment at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Carpenter Hospice or East Plains United Church would be greatly appreciated.
