Mom’s name was being called, she listened, she heard, she departed.
In the early morning hours, of July 23rd, 2021- Mama- Marilyn Orr- slipped peacefully away, with her daughter by her side. The sun was rising, what a beautiful day to fly home.
Marilyn was a compassionate person. She was a dedicated nurse, on so many levels, to so many throughout her nursing career. She was a nurse first, a mother, an animal lover, and advocate for all those less fortunate- the vulnerable of our society. Often an advocate for those without a voice.
Marilyn was born on Feb 24, 1942 in Moosomin, Saskatchewan at Moosomin Union Hospital. Her parents were Rudy & Helen Loster. When she entered the world, who knew it when she got a bit older- she would spend many, tireless hours in the place, the building she was born. Mom, had a younger sister Darlene. They were different in some ways, yet so alike in others. Her sister, was her first friend, best friend & loved her dearly. Sisters are sisters, but when the prairie dust settled- the only thing that mattered was just that- sisters were sisters. Mom thought very highly of her Aunty Marj, and her Uncle Ernie. They were positive forces in her life. She was always grateful for them.
Mom went to school in Moosomin. Worked hard for good grades. Her efforts paid off. She went into nurses training, with determination- she was going to be a nurse. What a nurse she was.
Nursing for Mom was more of a passion than a career or a job. Nursing ran in her blood. She often spoke of working many nights with Wendy Longman. Her long time friends -Pearl Jameson-now Pearl really was a Pearl, Elsie, Eileen ,Bev, Dorothy, Eleanor, Lyla, Gladys, so many to name really. She loved working at the Moosomin Union, all that was involved with it, and all the people who worked in it. She maintained those friendships for years. Right up until she didn’t go out anymore. She still called her friends, or they called her. Mom seen a lot of things, many not so good, she did it standing beside her nursing team. That included everyone around her, not just if you were a RN, anyone who was in the hospital was part of the team in her eyes. After a few years in the operation room, and on the floor- she tried her hand at Matron, then the Manager at Moosomin Union Hospital. She had passion and she was no push over. When she retired from Moosomin Union she went on to do her nursing in Long Term Care. There is a difference from acute to long term. Mom worked in Moosomin and Victoria, BC in long term care. Again, it was side by side everyone. She worked as a team. That meant breaking a sweat, always in the trenches with her comrades. There is never an ‘I’, in the word team.
Mom had wanted to join the Canadian Armed Forces. She did her nursing. However, she was very proud of her son Warren, and her son-in-law Kevin- as they lived the dream she once had for herself. Warren joined the Army- as a Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry Soldier. He served for seven years. Kevin joined the Navy- as a Sonar Operator. Serving 20 years. Mom was present for Warren’s battle school graduation in Alberta, as well as at Kevin’s in Nova Scotia. She was present when her grandchildren entered this world, has been a strong, available presence all their lives. Mom was there every deployment. Every important moment and day- as well as all the every days in between. Remembrance Day isn’t just one day a year when you are part of a forces family- it is every day of the year. We don’t just remember, we never forget. Mom was not just our biggest forces supporter, but many others that she met along the way. Even though she didn’t join the Canadian Armed Forces herself, she did our forces very proud.
Marilyn, had two children; Warren and Wanda. Later came two grandchildren. Her beloved Kyle & Megan. Marilyn was a wonderful Grandma. They were her precious gems. Their life, was her life. Especially after she retired from nursing. Always available. Forever caring.
Mom was an active member in the Hospital Auxillary, and Moosomin Drop in Center. Mom very much enjoyed her time at both. She loved to crochet, and quilt.
Marilyn leaves to mourn, her son- Warren (Dorothy) Orr, her daughter -Wanda (Kevin) Hintz, along with their children- Kyle and Megan. Her sister Darlene Dobson. Her dear friend Bev. All those who Mom knew.
The family would like all to know how much Marilyn did love. She had German and English blood in her- so let’s be honest- both are not known for their show of emotion. Just because she didn’t always show emotion, let us clarify that she most definitely felt it.
Mom was always very involved in her community, served her community -providing the best care she could. She was not a demonstrative person. Her actions when someone was in need was all the proof anyone ever needed to show how much she really cared about those around her.
What we have so lost, Heaven has so gained.
May you rest in peace Mom
We will miss you as much as we have loved you. Deeply & completely.
