Marguerite Eleanor (Mossman) Leslie, 89 of Port Hawkesbury passed away peacefully on July 6, 2021 at Strait Richmond Hospital. We have no doubt that her daughter, Karen and husband, Wallace were there to welcome her on the other side. Marguerite was born in Liverpool, NS to Leo and Elizabeth Mossman, and was the oldest of seven children – Barbie, Ginny, Norma, Sandy (deceased), Earl and Maureen. She married Wallace in 1952 and together they moved their family including three small children to Port Hawkesbury in 1960. This is where our branch of the Leslie family tree found its beginnings. Marguerite was not only a supportive wife and mother, but she also played an important role in the family businesses that she and Wallace built together. Even as a working mom with a husband who travelled for work, she was always the glue that held the family together. She was the head of our family, our matriarch and our rock. There was nothing this woman didn’t do without strength, grace, dignity and humour. Tough as nails; she never complained, she never asked for recognition, she did what she had to do to help raise strong, tough self-reliant children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, keeping us laughing, respecting and loving her throughout our entire lives. Later in life, she enjoyed a range of activities including golf, curling and swimming and was an active member in her church for many years.
Marguerite is survived by her daughter, Debbie (Rick) Benn, her son, Kevin (Barb) Leslie and son-in-law Ronnie McGee. She is predeceased by her first husband, Wallace, her second husband, Ralph, her daughter, Karen and her daughter-in-law, Anne. She will also be loved and missed by her six grandchildren, Tanya Benn, Michelle (Andrew) MacPhee, Katie (Rob) Kennedy, Laura (Lance) Bowness, Shamus (Jamie-Lynne) McGee and Darcy McGee. Marguerite took on a particularly special title with the birth of her first great-grandchild. Known always as Nanny or Nan to her grandchildren, she referred to her ‘little sweetie-pie’ and soon became known to everyone as ‘Nanny Pie’. Leslie (Tanya), Benn and Jane (Michelle), Leo and Kali (Katie), Antonio and Jack (Laura), and Emma, Dylan and Mya (Shamus) all had the great privilege to know and be loved by Nanny Pie.
One special person we would like to mention who has recently come into our lives was Shauna MacLean. Shauna has allowed Marguerite to stay where she was most comfortable, in her little granny suite with Debbie and Rick, as long as she could. Shauna was like an angel sent down to love like family, she cared for her in just the right way, offering everything she needed and more without ever overstepping. Marguerite got to spend her final days on Davis Drive where she could enjoy friends and family during a difficult time in our world. We will be forever grateful to Shauna for making these days so comfortable and enjoyable for her.
Our family gatherings will never be the same, but we will always remember all of the love, laughter and strength she brought to our lives. “Oh you fellas will miss me when I’m gone” was one of her famous lines…..she wasn’t wrong…she was always such a good sport when we would tease her. Another was “I don’t know why the Good Lord isn’t ready to take me”. Well Marguerite, you got your wish, the Good Lord was finally ready for you. Fly high with our other angels. We will miss you forever….but we know that you are where you want to be. Your work here is done and it’s now time for you to rest and be reunited with those who have been waiting so long for you to join them. “Wasn’t that a party?”
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Green’s Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. A graveside service will be held at St John’s Anglican Cemetery, West Berlin, NS officiated by Rev. Cheryl Rafuse on July 12, 2021 at 2:00pm. Donations can be made to Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Port Hawkesbury.
