Papa was a proud Acadian. He was married to our
late mother, Léa, for 57 years. He was a keeper
of knowledge. People contacted him for information on
events, names and the history of Pubnico.
He was friendly, welcoming and witty. Papa talked
to everyone and always had a joke in his back pocket. He
also loved to dance and was passionate about baseball, especially his
Boston Red Sox.
He went to work at a young age in order to support his family
after his father passed away. His jobs included working in a
canning plant in Pictou, working in an apple storage warehouse in the
Annapolis Valley, scallop dragging and swordfishing. He then
worked 45 years as a boat builder for Camille d’Eon where he
mentored apprentice boat builders.
Papa was a fine craftsman and woodworker. After his
retirement, at age 64, his home workshop kept him busy as he undertook
many small carpentry projects which included a replica of the
cenotaph, a 18th century sailing ship and the
Anne of Green Gables house that were used by his grandchildren in
parades. He was also the go to person for his children and
many others when they needed something fixed. Every morning
his garage was a gathering place where many stories were
told.
He was a volunteer firefighter for the West Pubnico Fire
Department for the past 50 years and a member of the of the New
Horizons. He was a charter member of the Pubnico Area Lions
and a past board member of the Yarmouth District Boy
Scouts.
He will be missed by his children and grandchildren as well
as the people whom he saw on his daily rounds which included
d’Eon’s Bakery and the Liars Club.
