Loretta Pemberton (Dix)
July 03, 1938 – February 14, 2021
Pemberton (Dix), Loretta, Mount Uniacke
We are saddened to share Mom passed away peacefully on February 14, 2021 in Arborstone Enhanced Care. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on July 3, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Lena (Landry) and Raymond Richard. She was predecessed by her husband, Kenneth Dix. Loretta is survived by her children: Michael Greenough (Mount Uniacke), David (Gillian) Greenough (Dartmouth), Vicki Jackson (Ontario), Charlene (Clarence) Kuhn (Sackville), Tony (Trish) Clark (Newport Corner) Shelley (Philip) Dix (Ontario), Kelcy Benedict (Halifax), Lynn (Darrell) Hiltz (Mount Uniacke), Darrell (Belinda) Dix (Mount Uniacke), foster son, Chris Russell (Halifax) and was predeceased by a foster daughter, Tammy Parker and a daughter-in-law, Joanne Greenough. She is survived by one brother: Laurie (Annette) Richard (Dartmouth). She was predeceased by 3 brothers: Cecil, Melvin, and Leo Richard and her two sisters: Lenora and Lena Richard. She had 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Mom will be remembered as someone who had a heart full of love that was always willing to give. Through the care and attention, she gave to the many children that she raised, fostered and babysat, Mom truly wanted every child to feel a sense of comfort and belonging. Mom’s love extended to all of those who knew her, and she would often purchase special keep sakes for them. She loved travelling outside Nova Scotia to see family members and will be remembered in the hearts of many. She was a lover of music, and although she did not sing or play any instruments, she certainly could dance. She enjoyed many dances at the Newfoundland Club and wore down the soles of all of her dancing shoes. Her favorite genre of music was country and she travelled with her sister to Nashville to fulfill her dream of seeing the Grand Ole Opry. To her grandchildren, she was known as “Nanny”. Mom liked sewing and over the years, she crafted many handmade decorations for her favorite holiday, Christmas.
She also made hundreds of pillowcases to gift to the Children’s Hospital and each one was truly one-of-a-kind! Mom was known for wearing many layers of clothing and would even wear fashionable scarves in the heat of the summer and ironically, for someone with a warm heart, she was always cold!
The family wants to express our gratitude to the staff at Arborstone Enhanced Care and in particular, the staff on the second floor. Special gratitude to Yvette Gagnon from Compassionate Companions for her deep and meaningful quality of time she spent with Mom. The communication with our family after each visit gave us comfort and peace of mind.
Cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of Dartmouth Funeral Home. To honor Mom’s wishes, she will rest with her sister, Lenora. Visitation with family (Covid 19 restrictions are in place) is Thursday, February 18, 2021 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm and private internment to be February 19th. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
A Mother’s Farewell to Her Children
by Helen Steiner Rice
When I must leave you for a little while
Please do not grieve and shed wild tears
And hug your sorrow to you through the years,
But stand out bravely with a gallant smile
And for my sake and in my name
Live on and do all thinks the same,
Feed not your loneliness on empty days
But fill each waking hour in useful ways,
Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer
And I in turn will comfort you and hold you near,
An never, never be afraid to die
For I am waiting for you in the sky.
Mom’s closing on the poem is:
My love to each and every one of my children
Love Mom
