Obituary of Laurel Gayle Shaw
SHAW, LAUREL “GRAN” (nee GIBNEY) Died peacefully on June 16, 2021 in Coburg, Ontario, at age 68. Laurel is survived by her loving husband Robert (Bob) Shaw, sons Brynn and Zachary Bennett, daughters-in-law Elizabeth and Leeann Bennett, grandchildren Mackenzie, Kennedy, Bethany, Lily, Zayden and Leah, sisters Tammy Gibney-Weirheid and Jill Kellie, and brother James Gibney. She was preceded in death by her parents Phyllis and Lorne Gibney. She will be sorely missed by her loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Laurel was born on September 23, 1952 in Toronto, Ontario. She spent her childhood and teenage years in Toronto, Newmarket, and Midland. Independent by nature, she left home at 16. She married Robert in 1997 and they spent many happy years building their life together. She had a long career in the Canadian Airline industry and touched many passengers and colleagues with her compassion and professionalism over the years. An active member of the Airline Union, she provided leadership and direction through many difficult periods in the industry and was a comfort to many of her fellow airline employees. Throughout her career she never hesitated to stand up for her fellow union members in times of need. Always up for an adventure, she lived to travel and had many incredible experiences with friends and loved ones. A talented artist and painter, her travels offered inspiration for many of her works Upon her retirement, she moved with Bob to Port Hope, Ontario, where they fully engaged in their new community. Her vivacious spirit was immediately evident to all who met her. In retirement she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, whether in Florida or at home in Port Hope. Her leadership talents continued into retirement as she took up important causes in the community and gave selflessly of her time and effort to continue to make the world a better place. A lifelong seeker and teacher, she continually strove for self improvement and self actualization. Toward the end of her life she fully embraced her truth and was at peace. Many who knew her often commented on how remarkable a woman she was. We are deeply saddened by her passing but grateful for the time we had with her. A Celebration of her remarkable Life will be held when local health conditions permit an appropriately sized gathering.
