Gwendolyn Anne Hartley
June 06, 1941 – October 15, 2021
It is with great sadness we announce that Gwendolyn Anne Hartley, 80, passed away at Hospice Halifax on October 15, 2021 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Pleasant Harbour to the late Harry & Anne (Van Buskirk) Kennedy, she lived most of her adult life in Dartmouth, NS and recent years in Eastern Passage. Gwen was a proud, devoted and loving mother to her only daughter Angela (Keith), who will miss her dearly. She is also survived by her sister Valerie (Sterling) and brothers Duncan (Jean) and Victor (Barbara), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings Dale, Wilbur, Parker, Phyllis, Faye, John and twin brother Glen. She lost her beloved husband, Robert, to cancer in 1977 and missed him everyday since.
Gwen was always determined to enjoy life. This included simple pleasures such as word search puzzles, walking, taking in festivities and spending time with family. In the last few years, it also included flying in a Cessna airplane (which she got to fly for a few minutes!), fly in a helicopter (thanks to a wish granted by We Are Young) and a family trip to Montreal with a train ride to Kingston to celebrate a birthday with her twin brother! She also fondly spoke about her numerous bus trips, one of which included a full tour of Newfoundland, as well as a cruise with her brother and sister-in-law.
Words simply cannot express enough thanks to all the hospice staff for your compassion, care and support during this difficult time. You truly are angels.
A private graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 21st. Gwen had a great love of flowers and always wanted a garden of her own, however, in lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to Hospice Halifax or We Are Young Association.
