Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gregg Larsen on September 22nd, 2021.
Gregg passed peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones after a courageous years-long battle with cancer. The son of Arnold and Maxine Larsen, Gregg lived in Calgary his entire life aside from his years at the University of Alberta. Gregg is survived by his loving wife Nancy, his sons Mathew (Nicole) and Daniel, and his four siblings: Jon (Andrea), Mark, Rande (Lorie), and Julie.
While Gregg supported his family with work in the oil and gas sector his entire career, his passions and talents also included woodworking and a general handiness around the home. He could be found camping, hiking, climbing, motorcycling, and skiing whenever opportunity allowed which included working as Nakiska’s Venue Coordinator during the ‘88 Olympics; an opportunity he remained proud of through his remaining years.
Modest to a fault, it can only be presumed that Gregg at one point wrestled a bear, won, and told no one. While his children may have eventually begun to doubt his claim to inventing the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, no evidence to the contrary has ever come to light.
Gregg and his family would like to extend their sincere thanks to his many good friends and our neighbours who reached out, Dr Tang and her team at TBCC, the staff of the Palliative Intensive Care Unit at Foothills Medical Centre, Amy and the rest of the palliative home care team that assisted in dignifying end of life care, and all other health care workers who were of incredible assistance during these extraordinary and trying times.
Gregg asks that any donations in his memory be made to Operation Eyesight Universal.
“I give you this one thought to keep. I am with you still – I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am the sweet uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not think of me as gone – I am with you still in each new dawn.”
