Obituary
PETHERICK, Gladys Amelia Rose (nee Clarke)
October 18, 1931 – September 15, 2021
Passed peacefully at home after a mercifully brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Daughter of the late Harry and Mae Clarke. Devoted wife of William (Bill) Petherick for 66 years. Loving mother of Chris, Valerie (David Dunham), Brenda (Stuart Preston), Cheryl (David Hruska), Clarke, and Randy (Julie Honey). Proud grandmother of Jordan Thackeray, KayLi and Tal Preston, Jack, Tessa, James, and Rebecca Petherick. Step grandmother of Al Hruska and Christa Hruska. Step great grandmother of Nathan and Ryan Hruska. Aunt, Great Aunt, and Great Great Aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Sister of Vernon (Myrna) Clarke, Robert (Carol) Clarke, Annamae Clarke, and the late Seymour Ashley, Gordon Clarke, Jack Clarke, Glenn Clarke and Grace McKeown. Sister-in-law of Olga Ashley, Lois Clarke, Bill McKeown, Joan Petherick, Enid and Ralph Van Drielen, Nona and Ralph Erskine, and Faye Petherick. Predeceased by step grandson Lee Hruska, nephews John Clarke, Ted Clarke and nieces Barbara Montgomery and Natalie Clarke, brother-in-law Eldon Petherick and sisters-in-law Marion Clarke, Linda Clarke, and Lois Martin.
Gladys was a passionate teacher with a decades-long career that began in local one-room schools and ended as a supply teacher for KPRDSB. She was a dedicated community worker, serving on several boards and committees at the local, county, and provincial levels. Gladys lived a life of Christian service, most particularly as a Sunday School teacher and producer of countless Christmas and community concerts.
An interest in bookkeeping and income tax led to the creation of a thriving part-time business in which Gladys remained active until a few months ago. A known communicator, she assisted many people in filling out forms, drafting speeches, and writing letters. Outside of her teaching career, she helped many young people who showed a need for guidance in any aspect of their lives.
She had a quick wit and a curious mind; she could be incredibly direct in expressing strong opinions, yet always presented her viewpoints with objectivity and an openness to hear all sides of a story.
Gladys was instrumental in helping her husband and family build a successful dairy enterprise. She enjoyed country living and the importance of a home-cooked hot lunch which always included dessert.
As a mother and grandmother, there were high expectations along with proud and solid support. As a lifelong learner herself, she encouraged any new endeavour as long as her family members were committed to trying their best.
Most importantly, Gladys was a selfless woman who truly embodied the spirit of her favourite mealtime grace – ever mindful of the needs of others.
