Germina “Mien” Adriana Maria (Vanderhyden) Groot
With grateful hearts for a life well lived, we say goodbye to a loving wife, mom, mother-in-law, grandma and great grandma. Mien Groot passed away peacefully at the Ritz Lutheran Villa on November 6, 2021.
She was born in Oirschot, Holland on July 24, 1929. After living through the Second World War her family decided to immigrate to Canada. On July 19, 1948, her dad and eight of the ten children sailed from Rotterdam, Holland on the “Tabinta” to Quebec arriving on July 29, 1948. From there they traveled by train to the Scarboro Mission in Toronto. The first morning they couldn’t believe all the food at the breakfast table. This new country so far was very good, there was lots to eat and everyone had a job.
In 1949 the family moved to Picture Butte, Alberta where they stayed for two years.
When they returned to Ontario, they bought a 50-acre farm in Gadshill but wanting something bigger they sold it and bought a 125-acre farm in Logan Township.
Mien met Jack Groot in September 1953 at a Dutch dance and they were married on July 30, 1954. They lived and worked in Beachville, Woodstock, and Oakville before buying her dad’s farm in Logan township in February 1957.
Mien was busy with seven children and helping on the dairy farm. They sold the farm and retired to Mitchell in 1989. They spent their time travelling, playing cards, shuffleboard, and lawn bowling. Mien’s hobbies were quilting, walking, singing in the church choir, meals on wheels, playing pool, knitting vests for the children in Guatemala and being a CWL member for over 60 years.
Mien was predeceased by her husband Jack in 2018 and son Jimmy in 1967. Dear mother of Barb Groot, Clasina and Bert DeBont, Cor and Leslie Groot, Marian and Paul Vogels, Marg and Jim Van Bakel, Gerard and Melissa Groot. Loving grandma to 20 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. Dear sister to Barb Vermeltfoort, Adrian and Christine Vanderhyden, sister-in-law to Jeff Timmermans, Nellie Vanderhyden, Annie Swart, Sien Sanders, Riet Groot and Lies Groot.
Predeceased by her parents Johannes and Barbara (Neggers) Vanderhyden and father-in-law and mother-in-law Cornelius and Klazina (Vessies) Groot. She was also predeceased by;
Gert and Lien Vanderhyden, Marie and Adrian Rombouts, Toni Timmermans, Riek and Adrian Van Gerven, Henk and Pauline Vanderhyden, John Vanderhyden, Nelly and Harry Van Haren, Peter Vermeltfoort, Jaap and Dora Groot, Lien and Thys Bakker, Bets and Piet Mosch, Annie Groot, Jaap Swart, Kees Groot, Siem Sanders and John and Marijke Groot.
Private family arrangements entrusted to the Lockhart Funeral Home, 109 Montreal St., Mitchell. Mien’s Mass of Christian Burial may be viewed at LockhartFuneralHome.com on Thursday.
