Memorial Donation
A graveside Celebration of life for Doreen (Nov. 28, 1931 – Nov. 17, 2017) and George (June 2, 1930 – Aug. 21, 2020) will be held at the Wapella Cemetery, Wapella, Saskatchewan on Saturday, June 19th 2021 at 1:00 p.m. with Sheilagh Garrett officiating. Their family & friends are invited to attend.
George Szafron was born to John and Annie Szafron on June 2, 1930 at Burrows SK, the 9th of 10 surviving children. In 1934 George’s parents purchased the farm where George grew up and farmed most of his life.
Evelyn Doreen Nixon was born to Robert and Evelyn Nixon on November 28, 1931 on their family farm in the Kendalton District near Wapella. She was the 2nd daughter of 4. After completing school, she worked as a care aide until she married. She loved gardening, growing flowers, embroidery work and quilting.
George and Doreen both loved to play Baseball and met at a Tournament. They married November 8, 1952. They had 3 children: Dianne, Donna and Bruce. Together they farmed the land and raised cattle for 54 years until they sold the farm and moved to Moosomin in 2006.
George and Doreen have 5 grandchildren; Deana, Dale, Meghan, Melanee, Cody and 6 great grandchildren; Logan, Quade, Natalie, Jace, Maxxum and Berlin.
In 2016 George’s health declined and they moved to Rockglen SK, George into Grasslands Health Centre and Doreen into the Rolling Hills Lodge. In February of 2017 Doreen had a stroke and was also moved into Grasslands. Doreen passed away November 17, 2017 and George on August 21, 2020.
