GAREC Steve Joseph 2021

Garec, Steve Joseph. Born at home on December 29, 1941 at what is now 395 Inman Road, Dunnville.
Steve was the youngest of five children born to Matthew and Mary, immigrants from Pohorela, Slovakia. During his youth he assisted his parents on the farm raising livestock and working the fields. Raised as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, he faithfully served as an Elder in the Dunnville congregation for over 50 years. Many congregation members consulted him for scriptural advice and guidance over the years.
After leaving school at the age of 16, he worked at Dominion Fabrics, Dunnville until 1962, whereupon he worked at Atlas Steels, Welland. After 39 years in the melt shop, he retired in September 2001 at age 59. In his late teens and early 20’s he enjoyed flashy cars and fashionable clothes, however, as he matured his life choices changed accordingly, always prioritizing his faith and his family above his own needs.
Steve passed away peacefully in his 80th year, after battling several health issues over the past few years and a vigorous one month battle with lung cancer, at the Haldimand War Memorial Hospital, Dunnville on Tuesday July 6, 2021. Predeceased by his parents Matthew and Mary Garec (nee Mikolaj) and siblings Matthew, John, Mike, and Mary Garec. Sadly missed by his wife Joanne, sons Kevin and Jonathan, unofficial adopted son Miguel Horton, and many nieces, nephews and their families.
Friends are welcome to join the family for an oline Memorial Service on Saturday July 31, 2021 sponsored by the Dunnville congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. For details please contact the family at (647)963-3847 or (647)281-1006. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations in his memory may be made to the Dunnville Kingdom Hall and to the Dunnville Hospital & Healthcare Foundation.
