Joseph Patrick Finn:
Passed away on May 29, 2021, in his 93rd year, of complications from cancer; at CHSLD Vigi Mont Royal in the Town of Mont Royal.
Patrick is survived by his sister Clarice Friesen of Windsor, Ontario, his nephew,
Fr. Paul Finn of Kingston, Ontario, and numerous other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Maureen Lund (Jerry) and by his brothers, Frank and Joseph (Eleanor). Born in Windsor, Ontario, Patrick attended Assumption High School and Assumption College. After receiving his B.A. in 1950, he attended a journalism program at Fordham University, in New York City, following which he began his first job as a reporter with the Sarnia Observer. After covering local news in Sarnia, Ontario for three years, he was hired by British United Press (later UPI) and served as a correspondent in a succession of Canadian cities including Toronto, Winnipeg, Halifax, Ottawa (Parliamentary Press Gallery), London and Montreal. In Montreal, he left UPI for Weekend Magazine, but returned to his roots as newspaper reporter a few years later, in 1964, when he accepted a position with the Montreal Star. At the Star he wrote for the business section and also covered transportation, science and defence issues. After the Star folded, in 1979, he found work as a communications officer and speechwriter for Canadian Pacific. A long-time resident of Westmount, Patrick was a man of deep faith, a radio enthusiast, an avid salmon fisherman and always a keen follower of the news. He retained his sharp mind throughout his life. A funeral Mass will be held at Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church in Westmount at 10:00 am on Wednesday, June 2, following which he will be buried in Gananoque, Ontario with his brother Frank and other members of the Finn family. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Pillars Trust Fund (Montreal) or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
