Ferdinand Tolentino Maingat 2021

Obituary for
Ferdinand Tolentino Maingat
For 71 years, Ferdinand (Ferdie, Deng) Maingat built a life on a foundation of love, faith, family and community. Known for his charming bright smile, big heart and boundless positivity, Ferdie brought joy and generosity to our world. Ferdie was truly an inspiration to many, having survived his first bout of cancer 23 years ago and dedicating much of his free time doing charitable work with the Knights of Columbus. After a second courageous battle with cancer this summer, Ferdie passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on September 16, 2021.
Ferdie’s life is celebrated by his devoted wife of 45 years, Marie, his two loving children, Ferdinand Maingat, Jr. (Sara) and Michelle MacPherson (Steve); and his granddaughters Zoë and Stella. Ferdie was pre-deceased by his granddaughter, Ruby; his sister Josie; and his parents, Isidro and Justina. Ferdie is survived by his two sisters, Cely Ochoa and Ely Cruz, and will be missed by his nieces, nephews and an extended community of family and friends around the world.
Originally from a rural barrio in the Philippines, Ferdie studied engineering at the University of the East. He embarked on a big adventure with his wife Marie as newlyweds – immigrating to Canada in the late-1970s to build a wonderful life with family in Edmonton, Alberta. A carpenter with a natural talent for woodworking, Ferdie also pursued many hobbies and interests including golf, bowling, reading, competitive ballroom dancing and world travel.
Faith played such an important part in Ferdie’s life. He served our Lord as a Eucharistic minister and adult server at Good Shepherd Parish for many years. A dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus since 2003, Sir Knight Ferdinand Maingat held several key leadership positions over nearly two decades of service – including Grand Knight and District Deputy with the Nazareno Council, and Financial Secretary and Council Retention Chairman with the KofC Alberta / N.W.T. State Council.
A Celebration of Life will take place (by invitation only) at Park Memorial on Thursday, September 23 and Good Shepherd Catholic Church on Friday, September 24, followed by a private burial at Holy Cross
For those who are unable to attend in-person, the funeral will be live streamed at parkmemorial.com (to view, see the webcasting link in Ferdinand’s Book of Memories).
In lieu of flowers and tributes, donations may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation in Ferdinand’s honour.
