ELLIOTT, James Herbert
1925 – 2021
It is with great sadness that the family of Jim Elliott announces his sudden but peaceful passing on Feb 11, 2021. He was born on January 26, 1925 on a farm near Beebe (now Stanstead) and lived in the town his entire life including seventy years in the house that he and Doris built. Jim had an inquisitive mind and a fascination with vehicles. He ran a bicycle repair shop in his youth and then went into business with his brothers Malcolm and Albert at Elliott’s Garage. His mother is said to have remarked that “Jim is only happy when he is burning gasoline”!
He met and married “the love of his life”, Doris Irene Drew while they were both working at Butterfield’s during the war.
As far as we girls were concerned, Dad knew everything, Dad could make anything, and Dad could fix anything. He was quite simply the best father anyone could ever wish for. He and Mum provided a rich family life that included hours of fun at our cabin on Lake Memphremagog. He was a master mechanic and had a following of like-minded friends both young and old. His hobbies included refurbishing older model vehicles and countless small engines, collecting “antiques”, making maple syrup and vegetable gardening. He had a long and interesting life and often said, “I was born in the horse and buggy age, and now I am living in the digital age”. In recent years, he mastered using an iPad so he could FaceTime and Skype with his daughters who live in the west. He did, however, quip that he would like to take it apart and see how it works!
He was able to live in his own home thanks to the support of family, neighbours and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Doris and nine siblings and their spouses. He is survived by his daughters Wendy (Dick) White, Jean (Wendall) Hartley and Janet (Todd) Chriest; his grandchildren Todd (Catherine) White, Gina (Kevin) Ramroop, Tim (Heather) White, Jason (Melissa) Hartley, and his nine great-grandchildren Kira, Darren, Ethan, Tristan, Cora, Marina, Mackenzie, Caitlynn, and Nathan.
He was a much loved, highly respected, patient and understated man who will be sadly missed by so many. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice or do something special for a neighbour. Arrangements are with Cass Funeral home. A private family celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of ELLIOTT James Herbert 1925 2021..
