In loving memory of Douglas Jackson Smith, who passed away peacefully on September 20, 2021 at the Ottawa University Heart Institute.
Doug is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Victoria (Vicki), his nieces Heather Bijloos (Martin) and Leslie Mahar, his nephew Paul Mahar (Caroline), recently predeceased by his sister Shirley Mahar, Sept. 5, 2021, and his parents Gordon and Margaret Smith.
Doug had been employed for many years with the many iterations of Metropolitan Life, Clarica and Sun Life in both Toronto and Ottawa.
Doug and Vicki enjoyed living on their property, Pine Hill, on the banks of the Ottawa River, near Fitzroy Harbour, Ontario. They took great pride in the knowledge that this property had been purchased by Doug’s great grandfather, Canon Francis Smith, in 1895.
Doug was a very special human being, with a heart of gold, filled with compassion and kindness for those he knew and loved – humans and dogs. He was always there with a helping hand, willing to give his perspective, guidance and his time to support you whenever needed. He was great listener, so interested in what was going on in your world. And let us not forget the very special “Doug’s Gals Club”, who will be missing his good humoured joking and teasing. He made all of them feel that they were his favourite. He was a good son, husband, uncle, friend, colleague and neighbour. You could always count on Douglas. He was quietly there, without fanfare, whenever a helping hand was required. He welcomed you into his world, his home and his heart with open arms, a handshake, a hug and a kiss. You felt his warmth, his affection and his loyalty. A life well lived is one filled with deep connections with people, with humour. humility and incredible humanity. That was the essence of Doug. He will be missed by his many, many friends both from his working life and from his private life.
Our thanks for the wonderful care given to Doug by his nurses and doctors at the ICU of the Heart Institute.
Interment will be at the Whyte’s cemetery on Canon Smith Dr., Fitzroy Harbour, Sunday September 26, 2021, at 1 o’clock, followed by a reception at Pine Hill.
