GARDINER, Douglas
Passed peacefully on January 3rd, 2020 at the age of 98.
A long service member of the Royal Canadian Engineers 1940 to 1975. Employed as a Clerk / Administrator in the construction and maintenance of Training and Prisoner-in-War Camps at Camp Boren, North Bay, Owen Sound, Brampton and Monteith. Serving overseas in England, Belgium, Holland and Germany with 11 Cdn. Park Coy. RCE. Joined the post-war Army Engineers serving in Oakville, Whitehorse, Yukon, London, Picton, Camp Borden and Chilliwack, B.C.
Predeceased by parents Emma and Gordon and brother Stanley Gardiner. Also predeceased by his beloved wife of 56 years, Arline. Arline was a strong and dedicated partner in a nomadic and often precarious life as an Army wife with its many challenges under trying circumstances.
Survived by niece Carol Matthiesen (John), Robert Ellwood (Shawnna) of Oakville, Ontario, Diane Curley (Mike) of Porcupine, Ontario. Also survived by extended family John (Tina), Erick (Selina), Ryan (Tiffany), and their children totaling seven.
Cremation has already taken place, with arrangements entrusted to the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie.
At Doug’s request there will be no service. Friends are asked to donate to South Lake Cardiac / Cancer Hospital at Newmarket.
A private family interment will be held on Saturday, July 10th, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. at the Barrie Union Cemetery, 338 Sunnidale Rd., Barrie.
