Darrel Lind Koller Saturday December 11th 2021

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Mr. Darrel Lind Koller on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at the age of 71 years. Darrel was born in Calgary, Alberta. He was the youngest of two sons of Oren and Ruby Koller. Darrel grew up playing Hockey in the winter and Baseball in the summer. The Koller home was a popular house in the neighborhood being the first on the block to have a TV and a pool table. Darrel’s hero was his father, Oren, who worked hard to provide for his family despite being blind. In the summers, Darrel worked for the CNIB at various concessions across Calgary. In 1977, Darrel moved to Red Deer, after he earned his Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Calgary. He started working for the John Howard Society. In 1979, he started at the Office of the Public Guardian as a Client Representative. Darrel later became the Public Guardian of Central Alberta until his retirement in 2007. Darrel always had a love for animals especially Arabian Horses. He bought his first Arabian in 1981 and began showing in halter. In 1987, Darrel and his family bought an acreage just outside of Blackfalds. It was the perfect place to raise his family and start a horse boarding stable called Steel Mountain Stables. This is where he shared his love of horses with his daughter, Jenna. He was involved with the Lacombe Light Horse Association and the Parkland Arabian Horse Association. Later he reconnected with a childhood hobby – racing pigeons. Darrel had his own pigeon racing loft for several years. One of his favorite things to do was going to watch his grandkids in their various activities. Darrel also felt giving back to the community was important and he was active in volunteering for various clubs and charities. He had the gift of gab making friends everywhere he went. His family and friends meant everything to him. Darrel will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Jenna of Edmonton and his son, Kyle (Crystal) of Sylvan Lake; his three grandchildren, Tristen of Edmonton, Austin and Brooklynn; and their mother, Pam of Sylvan Lake. He will also be sadly missed by his niece, Genene (Craig) Sholdice and son, Jaylan of Calgary; as well as numerous other family members and dear friends. Darrel was predeceased by his father, Oren in 1975, his mother, Ruby in 2014, his brother, Garlan in 1992, his sister-in-law, Pauline in 2021 and his nephew, Jason in 2003. At Darrel’s request there will not be a Funeral Service. Cremation entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta.
