Obituary
Cyril Leslie Reashor
Florence
Faith and beautiful memories will sustain us as we grieve the loss of our beloved Cyril on Thursday, June 3, 2021, at the age of 98.
Cyril, also lovingly known by many as “Da Reashor”, was born May 16, 1923, to Luke and Beatrice (Day) Reashor. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Cyril was predeceased by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Mildred (Millie) Leblanc, his only son, his pride and joy, Kenneth Luke Reashor, brothers Russell and young Cyril, and sisters Genevieve Cardone, Patricia Wright, Anita Milano, Vivian Williams, Viola Jessome, and Beatrice LeGree.
He is survived by his loving partner and caregiver of 15 years, Joan Wells, numerous cherished nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends Ray MacKay, John and Evelyn MacDougall, Johnnie O’ Brien, Joyce and Dave King, and Ann and Keith Shears.
A proud veteran, he continued his association and support as a member of the Florence Legion. Most of Cyril’s working life he served as a mail carrier with Canada Post. The fact that he delivered the first letter in Sydney Mines was another source of great pride to him.
Cyril so enjoyed his time with nature, be it waiting to witness the first Spring robin, the hummingbird activities at the St. Ann’s Campground, or the peaceful flow of the Margaree River. He would often reminisce about the special friends and good times he shared during those camping years.
Cribbage was “his” game, and never have we witnessed a player who could count points as quickly and accurately. Blest with a keen mind, Cyril always kept players on their toes.
His many years as a mail carrier provided him with the strength and endurance to dance the night away. Replacing leather soles became routine, and he was the envy of young and old alike.
Always possessing a strong sense of family, Cyril was an exceptionally devoted son, brother, husband, father and uncle. Traveling to the U.S. to spend time with his sisters and their families was a way of life in good times and bad.
His efforts were not forgotten as was evident by the presence of so many of his nieces and nephews at both his 80th and 90th birthday celebrations. Know that he loved all of you and really appreciated you traveling such a long distance to attend.
Consistent with his love of family and nature were the traditions he maintained to honour deceased loved ones. He became affectionately known as the “Mayflower Man”. He would spend hours each spring ensuring he had enough flowers for both family graves and church.
A long-time parishioner of St. Stephen’s Church, Florence, he was very active in the church community, including the Choir. Always steadfast in his faith, Cyril attended church regularly in his years in Glace Bay as well.
For those of us who spent a lifetime with them, visits from numerous clergy were commonplace in the Reashor home. Friends and visitors were always welcomed with open arms, and all treated with the same warm hospitality, beautiful lunches, and guaranteed laughter. Cyril loved to “carry on” and torment – all were assured a good time. For many years their precious dog Dutchess, joined in the festivities.
Our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Peter Poulos for his care and compassion over the years. As well, our thanks to Dr. Buhariwalla, nurses and staff of 3 South, Glace Bay Hospital, Amanda, Heather and Johnathan, and Fr. Norman MacPhee.
Thanks also to Ryan Andrew Bach and staff at Ferguson’s Drug Store, Glace Bay, and also to Isabelle Morrison for her loving care and support when needed.
A job well done, dear one. Rest peacefully. The Mayflowers will continue to bloom, as well as the memories you have given us.
There will be no visitation. A private family service will be held at a later date. Honourary Pallbearers are David Cardone, Francis Cardone, Jimmy Jessome, Johnny O’ Brien, Daryl Baxendale, Dave King, and Wylie Humby. Memorial donations in Cyril’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and Aileen’s Pets Without Vets, 744 Victoria Road, Sydney, NS. B1N 1J4, or a charity of one’s choice.
