Christy Jane Hughes Wednesday April 7th 2021

Hughes, Christy Jane
With profound sadness, the Hughes Family announces the passing of Christy on April 7, 2021 at age 42. Christy struggled bravely with cancer and its effects for 18 months.
Christy is survived by her loving family: Mom and Dad (Nancy and Brian), sister Jill and brother-in-law Mike Mielke, brother Dave and sister-in-law Hilary, her beloved niece and nephews Abby, Alex and William, her faithful border collie Caisy, uncles Mark (Janice), Warren, and Steve (Linda), and cousins Darryl, Marianne, Jayden, Josh and Jonah. She was predeceased by her true loves Manny (2002), and Chris (2006), and her grandparents Nana (Phyllis) and Poppa (Fred) Coulter, and Grandma (Brenda) and Grandad (John) Hughes.
Christy was born on October 17, 1978. She grew up in Waterloo, attending Sandowne Public, MacGregor, and Waterloo Collegiate, before taking Environmental Studies at the University of Waterloo. Once she decided that teaching was in her future, she attended Nipissing University to obtain her B.Ed. She taught mainly primary students for a total of 15 years in the Waterloo Region school board, with the last 12 years at Alpine Public School.
Christy was a much loved teacher at Alpine, where she enriched the lives of students with her passion for literacy and the environment, as well as social justice issues. She always led the school’s Terry Fox run with great care. Her positive impact on students will leave a legacy and she will be deeply missed.
Christy had many loves and passions. She was the very best giver of presents, especially to Abby, Alex, and Will. Many of their favourite toys and adventures were gifts from Aunt Christy. She loved baseball, and followed the Blue Jays fanatically. She was a voracious reader and gatherer of books. She had many many friends, with numerous comments on the positive impact she has had on them. Christy loved nature and the environment. She and Caisy logged countless kilometers on hiking trails and walks throughout Ontario, particularly in Algonquin Park. She loved Canada, taking pictures, restaurants, and simplicity – nothing fancy for her.
Most of all though, Christy loved “The Cottage”. That was where she was most happy and comfortable. She loved Kushog Lake, hiking around Haliburton, Spring Rolls from Mark’s Restaurant in Minden, and everything else about it. As a family, we are forever grateful to Nana and Poppa Coulter for the joy that the cottage has brought to us, and especially to Christy.
The family wishes to thank the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre staff, as well as the Grand River Hospital 6th Floor Oncology staff for their compassionate care of Christy over the last 18 months. Special thanks to Dr. Valdes and his team.
Christy’s family will receive relatives and friends from 5-9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener. Please note that if you plan to attend, masks are mandatory and you must RSVP your attendance through the funeral home website on Christy’s memorial page, or by calling 519-749-8467. Note that attendance is very limited due to the pandemic.
In lieu of flowers, donations to an Environmental or Nature charity would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home). Some of Christy’s favourites include Hope for Wildlife, Friends of Algonquin Park, EarthDay.ca, and the KW Humane Society.
