Ceacilia Anna Huinink Menting Friday June 11th 2021

At home in Courtice Ontario, in the company of her family, left this world on June 11, 2021 after a courageous battle with COPD.
Ceacilia was born to Anna and Hendrick Menting of Keijenborg, Holland. She was the youngest of 12 children and is survived by her sister Marietje. Ceacilia was a little ahead of her time. In no rush to get married, she came to Canada in 1958 to discover if this guy she met named Joe was worth learning more about. A brave move across the ocean for a single woman. And so began a courtship that became a 60 year marriage, with Joe, a loving partner to the very end. His devotion to be described as heroic. Ceacilia will be missed by Joe everyday.
Her education and skills in several languages served her well and she was quickly employed. Legend has it, she landed in Canada on a Tuesday and was working at North American Steel in Whitby by the following Monday. Before marrying, she had room and board with Agnes and Bill Schroer in port Whitby, arranged by Joe prior to her arrival. And so began a friendship that lasted over six decades. Together with the families of Ben and John Huinink and Henk and Benny Bouwmeister, they formed what was commonly referred to as the gang, with whom they had the privilege of life long friendships.
Ceacilia believed in owning your life and creating the future you want. Again, ahead of her time, she encouraged independence and the merits of self reliance to her four daughters, Debbie, Audrey, Lorraine and Jennifer. They listened and made their own way. Sometimes to the benefit and sometimes to the chagrin of their partners Dan Doiron, Darren Andrews, Kirk McNamee, Pierre Tremblay and Scott Arnott who were always welcomed in her home and challenged to a game of golf.
Ceacilia loved sport, games, a Bacardi white with coke no ice and all things fun. She genuinely despised crafts of all description and was not overly keen on most domestic chores but they could be tolerated if Louis Armstrong or the Tijuana Brass were playing loudly. She was a former Royal Ashburn club champion, a fierce table tennis player, a dominant squash player, could bowl over 250 no problem, loved cards and never let anyone win-not even her grandchildren, all of whom share her enthusiasm for sport, participation, engagement and making life their own. She will be remembered by Sarah (Derek), Sam (Niki), Adam (Mallory), Kayleigh (Danny), Madison (Jonathan), Matthew and Mitchell.
Heartfelt thanks to neighbours Shawn and Jennifer and Keri-Lynn and Jos for always lending a helping hand and to Dr. Williams for the compassionate care he provided to the end.
