Ann Crompton (nee Kidston)
June 28, 1931 –
December 15, 2021
On December 15, at the age of 90, a sparkplug of a woman drew her last breath.
Ann was insatiably curious, always open to new experiences, an intrepid traveller, a lover of nature and sports, a keen gardener, an appreciator of the arts, an occasional bulldozer, an enthusiastic reader and book club member, and an even more enthusiastic enjoyer of wine and food and good company. She instilled in her children an appreciation of the great outdoors and of books, a taste for adventure, a sense of fair play, an interest in current events at home and abroad. She had two settings—go and sleep—and since she was on much more of the former than the latter, she managed to accomplish a great deal.
Ann emigrated from England to Canada in 1957 with her husband, Eric, and they settled in Montreal West to raise their family. She returned to university (this time, Concordia) to earn a degree in library sciences and then worked as a school librarian for the PSBGM for two decades, until the early 1990s. In their retirement, she and Eric spent even more time at the family cottage they’d built in Quebec’s Eastern Townships, in between travels in Canada and abroad.
Her zest for life, her sense of humour, and her generous, outgoing spirit will be greatly missed by all fortunate enough to have known her, especially her children Richard (Sue) and Liz (Paul), her siblings (John, William, and Elizabeth) and their spouses and children in England and Australia, as well as many friends in Canada and abroad. She was predeceased by her husband and eldest daughter, Susan.
As per Ann’s wishes, there will be no funeral but a celebration of life when the pandemic permits. (Please write to annCfarewell@gmail.com for updates.)
