Obituary
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Allan Arthur George Ament of Medicine Hat.
Allan was born in Kindersley, Saskatchewan on July 30, 1947, to George and Audrey Ament rounding out his family with older sister Norma Audrey Ament Cole.
Allan spent his youth in and around the small farming community of Rosetown Saskatchewan. He recently recalled missing ‘my chickens’ and his dog, Bullet. He was a gifted athlete in both baseball and hockey. He would spend most winter days in the local arena, and he could be found most summer days at local ball diamonds. Perhaps the local Rosetown newspaper described Allan best when they published “….Allan knows more players in the area than anyone else, and if you were ever short of a player for a ball game, goal judge, base umpire or hockey player, Al would be willing to fill in.”
In his later years after losing both of his parents, Allan was cared for by his sister Norma. It was Norma who had the foresight to have Allan placed at South Country Village Haven of Care in Medicine Hat. Thus, began what would quickly become the most caring and loving of relations with the staff and residents.
Allan received an extraordinary level of care by a rare group of amazing care givers who always went above and beyond their call of duty. They truly were Allan’s family, especially when his sister Norma passed away in 2013.
Allan was a simple man.
Psalm 131, Vs. 1: “Lord my heart is not haughty nor mine eyes lofty; neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me”.
While he rarely left the facility, he was content and never alone. He was an integral part of every life of every residence or staff member in his wing of the facility, often found sitting in the main hall of the building speaking to passersby. He shared birthdays, celebrations, holidays, social events, and he individually welcomed and later said goodbye to so many residents. His presence will be missed, and his passing will undoubtedly leave a big void in the lives of the staff and residents.
Allan was predeceased by his mother, Audrey Euphemia Ament in 1996, his father George Allen Ament in 2004, and his sister Norma Audrey Cole 2013. He is survived by his dearest friend Terri Savignac of Red Cliff, Alberta who would call and speak with him daily, just to check in.
He was the loving uncle to Laurie (Alan) Finstad of Calgary, as well as great nieces and great nephews.
Allan passed away peacefully at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital with his family by his side on June 30, 2021, at the age of 73.
Laurie and Alan expressed they were privileged to be a part of Allan’s care in the last 8 years of his life, and will forever be grateful for lessons in life he taught us, best described in the following:
One John Chapter 4, vs. 21: “And this commandment have we from him, that he who loveth God love his brother also.”
Thank-you Allan, you have taught everyone more than you will ever know just by being “you.”
