Obituary
Ada Marie Lawlor
With thanks for a life well-lived, but with much sorrow, we, the family of Marie Ada Lawlor (nee Pinet) announce her passing on Thursday, September 23rd. She has joined her predeceased husband William and infant son John, twenty years to the date of William’s passing in 2001.
Born in Bertrand, N. B., Ada was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is predeceased by her parents Joseph and Marie (Doucet) Pinet, her brother Vivien and her sisters, Laura and Lea.
Ada is survived by her children Mary Taylor (Patrick), Grace, Tommy (Marlene), Gwen Butts (Joseph) and Bill (Mary Lou), as well as thirteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, with the ninth due on the date of Ada’s upcoming 100th birthday on December 4th, 2021.
Mom left this world as she lived it: with deep love for her family and friends. She had great pride in and perfected the many roles she played. Her professional life began at the Dunn Hospital and then became the first Lab / X-ray technician combined upon the opening of the Hotel Dieu Hospital in December, 1942. From there she was stenographer for the late Dr. D. Thompson. Moving up to Culligan, N. B. in 1949 after her marriage to Dad, she assumed the position of Post Mistress until 1971. She completed her life as a ‘career woman’ at Belledune School from where she retired as secretary in 1988.
Although her family was her life, Mom took care of so many beyond her own. She always made time to use her many talents to tend to the needs of others and embraced all of these roles with love and respect. She was completely selfless and her life was framed by her many charitable acts, from opening her home to numerous people in need, to donating beautifully-decorated cakes to church, school and community. She was a fine artist, tailor and cook and she was famously known for her excellence in cake decorating and her specialty homemade preserves and fudge. A highlight in her senior volunteer life was having the honour of being Senior Ambassador for the 2003 Bathurst-Campbellton Canada Games.
We extend our heartfelt thanks for the kindness and compassion of the many friends who brought joy into Mom’s life, especially during the last chapter of her life. Our community has lost one of her most wise, kind and treasured daughters.
Donations to St. John the Evangelist Church or cemetery fund or to a charity of one’s choice would be greatly appreciated. In the spirit of Mom’s legacy of generosity and cheerful giving, drop off a meal to someone in need, volunteer in your church / community, or carry through that positive thought about doing something to make someone happy. As Mom would say, “have a cheerful approach to life.”
Visitation will take place at St. John the Evangelist Church, Belledune, on Wednesday, September 29th from 2 – 4 PM and 7 – 9 PM, and on Thursday, September 30th from 1 – 2 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 PM followed by a reception at the parish centre. Funeral arrangements are in the care of MacMillan’s Funeral Home, Black Point.
