Obituary
It is with tearful eyes and broken hearts, we share the passing of Fay on May 4, 2020 at Kelowna General Hospital. Fay was born and grew up in Peterborough Ontario. In 1956 Stu came into her life and they immediately hit it off. They were married a year later and almost immediately started their westward journey.
The couple moved to Sault Ste. Marie Ontario in the fall of 1957. Fay, with her outgoing personality, soon connected with several young wives who had also recently moved to town. She took up badminton before bearing our first son Jim, born in June 1958. Within a year, the couple started enjoying the beaches on Lake Superior.
In September 1960, an opportunity for employment in BC inspired a move to Kimberly BC. It was not long until Fay, with her outgoing nature and love of life, met a lot of nice people, many of whom have become our dearest life-long friends. In September 1961, our second son Steve was born. A neighbor on the same block was having a baby and these people were to become good friends for many years. Fay found a wonderful older lady to baby-sit our boys occasionally, and they liked having her, giving her freedom to get out once in a while. Fay has always enjoyed ‘kitchen’ bridge and it was not long until she was with new friends in ladies bridge. This was followed, some years later, by monthly evening bridge with four couples. In February 1967, our third son Paul was born. As the families grew, we enjoyed holidays with friends at Shuswap Lake, tent camping and then ‘cabin’ camping. It was in Kimberley that Fay started skiing, but reserved her efforts to nice, warm, sunny days in the spring.
After 10 years of wonderful times in Kimberley, the family moved to Penticton. While only there for 3 years, Fay made friends easily and soon developed a wonderful, lasting friendship with our neighbor. In 1973, the family was transferred to Trail. It was not long till she found neighbors to form a bridge foursome that stayed together for many years. Once again, this was followed with six couples getting together monthly. She enjoyed volunteering at the hospital and at musical and performance festivals. Fay enjoyed festive occasions. She was a wonderful cook and loved family birthdays and dinners with friends and many parties at the Colombo Hall. But her pride and joy were her grandchildren. She looked forward to their every celebration, performances and, more latterly, proudly following their careers.
Fay had a good eye for fashion and decorating. She also loved shopping and travel. Whether it was on business trips with Stu or are up to Kaslo for the day, she really enjoyed poking around in unique little shops where she always found some little thing that would be perfect for this friend or that. Our home was tastefully decorated with favorite mementos. She had a wonderful memory and could tell you, from whom and where, everything came. For many years she enjoyed the tranquility at the summer cabin they built on the Arrow Lake. There was always happy hour and the bocce game with the neighbors. The couple also had fond memories of the many holiday trips to Hawaii with dear friends. In particular she absolutely loved the five-week trip to Italy with Norm and Cathy Thomas and, four years later, another five-week trip to France. After 45 years in Trail, their house and yard had become too much to handle. They made their last move to the Missionwood Retirement Resort in Kelowna and it was not long before Fay’s love of people led to new friends.
She fought a courageous battle with her breathing and back problems. Fay’s time on earth has ended, but her spirit and memories will remain in the hearts of all who knew her. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She will be dearly missed by her loving husband Stu of 63 years; sons Jim (Tracy) of Espanola, Steve (Marian) of Kelowna, and Paul (Joanne) of Rossland; and six grandchildren: Andrea and Mathieu, Michael and Graeme, and Charlotte and Aidan.
A celebration of life will be held in the summer at Fay’s Cabin on the Arrow.
