Robert Charles Sowerby 19282020

Robert Charles Sowerby
1928-2020
Robert Charles “Bob” Sowerby, 1928-2020, formerly
of Lakeville, Kings County and Ottawa, but more recently of Kentville
passed away on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at age 92, in Evergreen
Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born in Moncton, NB he was a son of
the late Robert E. and Rita (Brine) Sowerby. Robert was
predeceased by his beloved wife, Minnie (Beals) of 67 years in 2018,
formerly of Bridgetown and Truro and brother, Harold
“Lee”. Robert is survived by daughter, Deborah L.
(Douglas Owen) of Fall River; son, David K. (Colleen), of Babcock
Ranch, Florida; grandsons, Michael (Kristy Marie), Fort Myers,
Florida, and Blake (HeYan); great grandsons, Ivan, Atlas and Orion, of
Hong Kong. In Ottawa Bob was employed by the Department of
Printing and Stationery which printed the verbatim exchanges of the
House of Commons. When Bob was offered an opportunity to return to the
Maritimes to be closer to family, he accepted the transfer and became
Manager of the DSS Printing Plant in Halifax along with its National
Defence sub units. He retired as Manager for Printing Operations, Nova
Scotia, Atlantic Region. Bob was an avid hockey fan and while residing
in Ottawa, he was instrumental in amalgamating several subdivision
hockey leagues into an interlocking league with the strength to
qualify their league for indoor ice time. Bob was also a golfer but
always found time for gardening and he excelled at it having won a
beautification award and was also featured on TV. Minnie and Bob built
their retirement home abutting Silver Lake in Lakeville. They became
active members of Billtown Baptist Church with Bob serving on various
committees. Retirement meant joining Ken-Wo Golf Club, Valley
Gardeners Club, Glooscap Curling Club and making new friends. It also
allowed Bob and Minnie time to winter in Bradenton, Florida for many
years where they became members of the Canadian Snowbird Association.
While there, Bob played golf as a member of the Peridia Golf and
Country Club and the Manatee Golf Club in addition to being a member
of the Floridana shuffleboard group. Son David and family were living
in nearby Tampa during those years so they were able share many family
milestones and memories together. A private family burial
will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville, Kings County.
When travel and gathering restrictions are lifted, a remembrance
ceremony, with reception, will be in the White Family Funeral Home,
Kentville. Donations in memory may be made to the Robert E.
Sowerby Scholarship Fund at Gallaudet University of Washington or a
charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to
the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
Kentville.
