Obituary
Obituary for Norman Edward Kelly
April 12, 1936 – August 15, 2020
Norman passed away peacefully, in his sleep at the age of 84. Norman immigrated from Belfast, Ireland in 1963 and chose to raise his family in Burnaby, where he was an active member of the community.
Norman is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years; Maureen, their 3 children, Christine (John), Jennifer, Edward (Susan), and 5 grandchildren; Kelly (Chad), Kimberly (JC), Kathryn (Scott), Brett, Jacklyn and two great grandchildren; Benjamin and Hutton, and his brothers; Jim (Margaret) and Gerald (Linda) along with numerous nieces and nephews in Canada, Ireland and England.
Affectionately known as ‘Papa’, he lived for his family, and worked to ensure that each child, grandchild, and great grandchild was sufficiently spoiled with love and kindness. Norman was a talented artist in watercolour and oils and spent his free time sketching and painting scenes of Ireland, happily sharing the stories that inspired every painting. Remembered for his entrepreneurial spirit and immense generosity he was always willing to lend a hand or pick up the bill to ensure that no one was left out or left wanting.
He brought people together. His passion for life and his love for his family lives on in the bond that they all share. He owned and operated many small businesses throughout his life, including OK Painting, Kelly’s Steak and Seafood and Kelly’s Fantastic Fish & Chips in New Westminster and Vancouver First Call Services.
Norman loved interacting with people and working the ‘front of the house’ in both of his restaurants. He valued relationships and could strike up a conversation with anyone, sharing laughter with everyone he met. He touched the lives of many through volunteer work with Our Lady of Mercy Parish where he ran Bingo, and Saint Francis De Sales Parish and Elementary School where his grandchildren attended, and where his wife is a long-time member.
His family share a great gratitude for the staff of Buchanan Lodge and the care they gave our beloved Papa.
