Melbourne Ross Hudson Jr 19212020

Melbourne Ross Hudson Jr.
1921-2020
Melbourne Ross Hudson Jr. – age 98, of Victoria
Beach, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2020 in Mountain Lea Lodge,
Bridgetown. Melbourne was born on August 28, 1921 in Victoria Beach to
Melbourne and Nellie (Halliday) Hudson. Melbourne was a proud and
humble man – a true old-timer – who was
comfortable talking with and telling stories to anyone. He had an
exceptional work ethic no matter the job and his resourcefulness was
evident in all he did, whether it was using old wood to make
model boats or toys, fixing shoes, sewing buttonholes or repairing
things around the house or fishing boat. Meb would often astonish us,
but never so much as when he carved new treads in his favourite old
dulsing boots. He enjoyed happiness and good health and was always
moving – walking, biking, beachcombing or puttering. Fall
brought his favourite season and “his little black book”
recorded every deer harvested and the specific location, from his
teens until the last year he could traverse the woods. For most of his
life, Meb made his living on the water and the tide times were the
only ones that mattered. He operated the passenger ferry from Victoria
Beach to Digby for many years, a job which he thoroughly enjoyed.
After that, he fished his own boat and picked and sold dulse into his
80’s. When asked by his granddaughter whether he would have
done anything different in his life, he pondered for a few seconds and
replied thoughtfully, “I’d have had a bigger
boat.” He demonstrated extraordinary patience, he never
complained and was kind and thoughtful – wonderful gifts
that he taught by example. Melbourne is survived by daughters, Wendy
Ann Trimper, Sheila Clayton, Betty Camsell; grandchildren, James
Camsell, Leah Elzinga, Shane Clayton, Vinna Moore, Jennifer Camsell,
Erin Joyce, Sarah Camsell, Beth Strange, Charlotte Allen; 12
great-grandchildren; brother, Milton. He was predeceased by his wife,
Maisie (Ells); son, William Joyce; special nephews, Bobby and Mickey
Ells; siblings, Arthur, Rose, Frederick, Kenneth, Norma, Nellie,
Wallace, Myrtle and Max. There will be no visitation, by request. The
funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m.
Tuesday, January 28, 2020 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville,
Reverend Gary Manthorne officating. Burial will take place in the
Baxter’s Harbour Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations in
memory may be made to Baxter’s Harbour Community
Hall. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family
Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
