Matthew William Sherman Bent
1997-2020
Matthew William Sherman
Bent – 23, Calgary,
Alberta, formerly of Truro. With deepest sorrow, we announce that our
beloved son, brother, family member and friend, Matt, passed away
suddenly on Saturday, December 19, 2020, in Calgary, Alberta, from
natural causes. We take comfort in knowing that Matt spent the evening
prior to his death with his cousin, Jason Bent, laughing and having
fun. Those who knew Matt, even just a little, lost a shining light in
their lives.
Matt will be missed every day by his mom, Cathy Kelly, Truro;
dad, Martin “Marty” Bent (Rachel Place), Truro;
brother, Kyle Bent (Caitlin Whooten); grampy, William Kelly (Eleanor
Lilley), Lyons Brook; grandma, Gloria Kelly, Sudbury, Ontario; loving
aunts, uncles, cousins and many great friends and colleagues. He was
predeceased by his sister, Brianna Catherin Bent; grandfather, Sherman
Bent. We know Matt was welcomed with loving arms in Heaven by his
family that went on ahead, where he will be loved there as he is here
on earth. Matt loved his family and dogs, Bear and Nova,
unconditionally and looked forward to his daily chats with all of
them, even the dogs!
Matt enjoyed playing XBOX and loved anything to do with Star
Wars; we think it is fitting that he will be buried in the R2-D2
sculpture that he made. An avid sportsman, Matt enjoyed skiing, rugby
and hockey, but turned his attention to refereeing when he realized
that’s where the money was. He was a hard worker and
entrepreneur, and was well on his way to fulfilling his goal of
becoming a millionaire. “Work smarter, not harder”
is something that Matt subscribed to and he will be fondly
remembered as the friendly face behind the bar at The Nook and Cranny,
The Blunt Bartender and Belly Up; he absolutely loved
bartending.
Matt was a brother and member of International Association of
Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers Local 116 and was the
very first Nova Scotian to represent his Local in competition.
Currently, he worked with Tacten in Calgary and was part of the RAT
(Remote Access Technology) team; we are grateful for his team of big
brothers watching out for him.
Due to Covid-19, visitation and interment will be held at a
later date. If so desired, donations in Matt’s memory to
Colchester SPCA are welcomed. Arrangements have been entrusted to
Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro.
Private messages of condolence may be sent to the family by viewing
