Marie Charlebois-Serdynska
Passed away peacefully on December 8, 2020, after a brief illness. Marie was born in Montreal, QC to Jean and Agnes “Nancy” (nee Gillis) Charlebois, on August 28, 1956. Beloved wife of Joseph; dear mother of Anna (Tom) and Kristof (Christine); loving grand-maman to Joey and Lydia. Fondly remembered by sisters Louise, Lynn (Gary), Jackie (Luc), Diane (Yves) and her many nieces & nephews: Alice (Frank), Claire (Victor), Alex (Andrew), Jesse, Michael, Marc (Stéphanie), and Catherine (Nicholas).
Marie had a life-long passion for caring for others everywhere she went, particularly children and the less fortunate. While living in London, England, she was a social worker and she helped establish a Toy Library, so that children would have access to new toys. When she moved back to Canada, she became deeply involved with Saint Peter’s parish, organizing and participating in many charitable events, including the Backpack Project, Christmas Dinners, and many others. She also volunteered regularly with Feeding Others of Dartmouth at Margaret’s House. Throughout her life, she championed bilingualism, valuing both French and English and their ability to compliment one another.
Marie had a love of the arts and was an artist in her own right, always eager to explore new mediums and new ways to express herself creatively. In addition to being a talented seamstress, she enjoyed woodworking, wood burning, and soapstone carving. In recent years, she became a dedicated potter and though she was humble and self-effacing, she loved to share her latest works with friends and family and to discover new ways she could improve her craft.
Marie delighted in watching her grandchildren grow, and treasured their time spent together. Whether it be an outing to Rainbow Haven beach, Fisherman’s Cove, a walk through Dillman Park, Birch Cove Park, or working in her own garden, Marie loved to spend time outdoors and shared this enthusiasm with her grandchildren.
An adventurous spirit with a lively disposition, Marie enjoyed travel and always kept moving, making meaningful connections with people everywhere she went. She could never go far without running into someone she knew or striking up a conversation with a total stranger. She had a great talent for empathy and valued seeing the world from different points of view, and was ever concerned with the wellbeing of others.
Marie was loved by all and will be dearly missed by her many close friends and relatives.
The family would like to thank the staff at the QEII Hospital for their assistance during this difficult time, with special thanks to Janice Spencer. Special thanks also to friends, family, and neighbours who provided much needed support including Cynthia Bourbonnais-Boyce, Leslie Nasmith, Monica Bravo, Sarah Mikus, the Boudreau family, and Jackie Tessier.
A private memorial service has taken place on December 17, 2020 at Saint Peter’s Church, Dartmouth with interment to occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marie’s memory can be made to Craig’s Cause Pancreatic Society, Feeding Others of Dartmouth Society, or Canadian Parents for French Nova Scotia.
