Maria Loparco
With broken hearts, we announce the passing of Maria (Nietta) Loparco of Edmonton, Alberta. Maria is survived by husband of nearly 56 years, Oronzo Loparco; daughters, Maria Santina (Duwayne) Marini and Anna Loparco (Gary Smith); grandchildren, Adriano, Isabella, and Kira; brothers, Pietro (Pina) Loconte, Nicola Loconte and Gino (Pina) Loconte; and many nieces and nephews. Maria was predeceased by her parents, Vito and Maria; sisters, Rita and Anna; and brothers, Antonio, Angelo, Franco and Giovanni. Maria was born in the town of Cisternino, in the southern region of Puglia, Italy. She immigrated to Canada in 1962, married Oronzo, and raised her daughters. Although she had little formal education, she was an industrious woman who spent most of her career with Sealy Canada. Above all else, Maria loved cooking hand-made orecchiette pasta and spoiling her grandchildren. She was the life of the party and would always find a way to ‘win’ the best prizes at games played with family at Christmas. Maria suffered severe pain in her last few years of life and spent her last month at the Glenrose Hospital trying to regain her strength until she became suddenly ill with a blood infection and had to be transferred to the Royal Alexandra Hospital. The family would like to thank the staff at both facilities for their kind and compassionate care. Her loving soul will be missed by all.

A private family donation and ceremony is being arranged in Italy next year at Maria’s beloved church Santi Cosma e Damiano, to which she made annual donations.
