Louisa Elizabeth Lapointe Lindsay Saturday June 27th 2020

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Louisa Elizabeth “Betty” Lapointe (nee Lindsay) of Pembroke, Ontario on June 27, 2020. She passed away peacefully at Pembroke Regional Hospital at the age of 83. Louisa was the beloved wife of the late Rheal “Ray” Lapointe (Feb 2019).
Louisa was born 9 Jan 1937 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
She will be missed by her son Michel and his partner Wendy Riis, her sister Carol Bawkowy and Carol’s partner Bob Held, and her grandchildren David Smith, Joe Lapointe, Charlie Lapointe and Jason Mireau.
She is predeceased by her mother Evelyn Lindsay (nee Gentry), her father Robert Lindsay, and her daughter Maggie.
Louisa started life on her parent’s farm, not far from Calgary, Alberta. Life was tough on the farm during the hungry 30’s. There wasn’t much to eat other than potatoes. One day, Louisa’s dad went to Calgary to see if he could find work to support his family. Not long after, he showed up back on the farm wearing a soldiers uniform. World War 2 was happening, but because they could not afford a battery for their radio, they had no idea.
Louisa’s dad went off to Europe to fight, and Louisa and her mom moved into Calgary where her mom worked in fields moving rocks by hand to build runways for the military base. After the war, the family bought one of the war-time houses that had been built for workers and returning soldiers in South West Calgary, near the military base.
Around the age of 18, Louisa met a handsome paratrooper, Rheal Lapointe, from Ottawa, that was temporarily stationed in Calgary for training. She fell in love, moved to Ottawa and married her life-long partner ‘Ray’.
Louisa was a stay-at-home mom for the first 12 years, and her son Michel, has fond memories of that time; she was a great mom!
Louisa then got a job working at RCMP headquarters in Ottawa. She became a handwriting analyst and a finger print expert. There were no computerized systems back then, so she had to manually compare finger prints with thousands of prints in files; imagine that!
After 30 years she retired and moved with her husband to Pembroke to be near their grandson David.
Respecting Louisa’s wishes cremation has taken place. Interment to follow in Ottawa.
