July 30, 2020

Chief Petty Officer Leo C. Pennell of Trepassey, NL, age 85, passed away suddenly, but peacefully at the Miller Center on July 30th, 2020.
Leo, our dad, was a proud veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy, a Korean War Veteran and recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is pre-deceased by his loving wife Elizabeth, his parents Margaret and Daniel Pennell, sister Theresa (Harold), brothers Cyril (Carmel & Jo), Joseph, Gerald, John Mike, Anthony (Theresa), Alphonsus and Reginald, brother-in-law Don Kauk as well as his special son-in-law Clarence Sutton.
He will be fondly missed by daughters Rebecca (Dan) Riordan, Spokane, Washington; Cheryl (Bruce) Gallant, Halifax, Nova Scotia; Darlene Sutton, Paradise; Tami Pennell, Winnipeg, Manitoba; Heather (Perry) Penney, Mount Pearl and his son Scott Pennell, Kilbride; his grandsons Kyle, Shayne, Jesse, Samuel, Sebastian and his granddaughter Madison, as well as his sisters Kathleen (Cyril) Ryan, Mary Kuck, brothers Victor (Doris), Harold (Marie),and sisters-in-law Catherine, Irene, Shirley, and nieces and nephews near and far, and many family and friends in Liverpool where Mom and Dad lived for many years while Dad was stationed in the Navy, and the friends he made while Mom and Dad lived in Bay Bulls.
Thank you to the doctors and nurses who helped our Dad including Dr. Morrey, Dr. O’Dea, and Dad’s nurses Elizabeth and Loretta, who was ironically a guardian angel for Clarence during his time inn the Miller Centre. Also, thank you to the ambulance drivers who respectfully drove our dad passed the National War Memorial in St. John’s. Our Dad had many interests.
He was an avid reader, a loyal Toronto Maple Leafs hockey fan, and an obsessive salmon fisherman. Later in life Dad could be found in a rink cheering his grandsons on and being one of their biggest supporters. During the last weeks of his life Dad always said he wanted to be in his “happy place”, casting his rod on the Northwest River in Trepassey, catching an elusive salmon.
