Passed away peacefully after an extended period of illness, at Extendicare Kingston on Thursday December 24th, in her 94th year. She was born on Wednesday August 3rd, 1927 in Fredericton, New Brunswick to the Reverend Ernest and Mary Stephens.
June grew up in Fredericton. An only child, she sadly lost her father when she was 9 years old. She stayed in Fredericton, graduating from the University of New Brunswick at age 19. June, accompanied by her mother, then travelled to Kingston, Ontario, where she earned a master’s degree from Queen’s University. She then joined Agriculture Canada in Belleville, Ontario where she worked in the lab for 8 years. June, accompanied as always by her mother, then travelled to London, England where she continued her studies, earning a PhD. in Bacteriology in 1961 from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine at the University of London. There she met her future husband.
June married Dr. Paul Chadwick in 1962 in Fredericton. They were happily married for 50 years, until Paul’s passing. June and Paul lived briefly in Halifax, Nova Scotia before coming to Kingston and joining the faculty at the School of Medicine at Queen’s University, where they worked until their retirement. Over 25 years as a professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Queen’s, she authored and edited numerous scientific papers and journals related to comparative and invertebrate immunology and is fondly remembered by many of her students for teaching them about fermentation.
In her spare time, June enjoyed travelling, spending time with her numerous pets, gourmet cooking and volunteering at Sydenham United Church. June is survived by her daughter Janice Berry (Michael) and her grandchildren Nolan and Charlotte.
A private funeral service for June will be held at James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd., Kingston at 2:30 pm, Wednesday December 30th, 2020, followed by committal at Cataraqui Cemetery. Her many friends and loved ones are invited to participate via a live stream please. click here
