Jerry Clifford Stasiuk died peacefully and gracefully at Heritage Lodge in Winnipeg on October 17, 2020, after a brief and decisive experience with COVID-19. We thank his care team sincerely for their support and generosity throughout his time at the home, but particularly during the pandemic – a very stressful time for care workers.
Jerry was born June 7, 1947 in Vita, MB, and was raised on his family homestead in Caliento, MB, where he lived until he moved to Winnipeg for his final year of high school. After graduating with an Agriculture degree from the University of Manitoba, he worked 28 years with Agriculture Canada until his retirement in 1997. Jerry was a quiet, gentle man who struggled with his mental health throughout his adult life. He returned to his Caliento home frequently throughout his life, where he grounded himself being back on the land, visiting his many cousins, and foraging for mushrooms in the Ukrainian tradition. Music was very important to Jerry; he had fun playing guitar and drinking beer with his music buddies and he found purpose instilling a love of music in his kids. Jerry found joy in the successes and happiness of his family, he enjoyed being among the hubbub of friends and family, and he made a few deep friendships that endured his battles with addiction and depression. With the extraordinary support of his wife, Johanna (who predeceased him in 2018), Jerry eventually found himself in Heritage Lodge – a safe and comforting place to live out his days.
Jerry is predeceased by his parents Peter and Anne, his stepfather Mike Ewanchuk, his brother Emil, his wife Johanna, and he is survived by his resilient sister Janet and his three loving children, Sara (Adam), Nikki (Rod), and Ben (Lindsey).
Jerry has been cremated, his remains will be buried next to Johanna at the Sundown Ukrainian Orthodox cemetery when it is safe to gather. Anyone who would like to honour Jerry’s memory may do so with a donation to the Main Street Project.
