Gladys Glady Marion Stevenson 19232020

Gladys “Glady” Marion Stevenson
1923-2020
It is with great sadness we announce the
passing of our cherished Mother and Nannie, Gladys
“Glady” Stevenson, age 97, formerly of
Amherst, Nova Scotia. Glady passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2020,
at her daughter’s home in Herring Cove N.S, where she had
been living.
Born in South Milton PEI, she was the
only child of the late Percy and Goldie (Coles) Hooper.
Glady will be dearly missed always by
daughter Marian Stevenson, husband William (Bill) Johnston, and her
beloved grandchildren Aaron and Chloe Johnston.
Glady was predeceased by her husband
Robert L. Stevenson.
Mom grew up in rural PEI on a farm in
the days of the one – room schoolhouse, oil lamps and sleigh rides to
church and town. Mom loved the outdoors, being active, and animals.
She wasn’t one to sit inside except to read. She helped on
the farm, learned to drive on a tractor, skied, skated on the local
pond and danced with the WW 2 boys who were billeted on the
farm.
Mom graduated from Prince of Wales
Collage in Charlottetown and began her work life for a law firm in the
same city. She married my father in 1951 and moved with him to
Amherst, Nova Scotia. There she had a varied and interesting
career. She worked for Tennants Pop Factory, Tantramar
Motors, DREE. the Cumberland School board and lastly the
Public Health Department.
Mom and Dad enjoyed camping with the
Flyway Campers (even winter camping) and time spent at her cottage in
Amherst Shore. For her a swim in the warm waters of the Northumberland
Strait, a walk on the flats, and time spent with her family was a
“little piece of heaven”. She even had a quick dip at age
95.
After her retirement, Mom did some
traveling, took a cruise, visited places in Europe and family in
Canada and the US. Since she was an “only” child it was
important to her to keep in touch with her many
cousins.
Mom was a huge supporter of “giving
back”, and belonged to many volunteer organizations; the Anglican
Church Altar Guild, St Martha’s church group, the IODE, the
food bank and the YMCA to name a few. She met many lifetime friends
while working and volunteering and she cherished those
friendships.
Arrangements are under the care and
guidance of the Jones Family Funeral
Centre, 70 Church Street, Amherst, NS
(902-667-8777). A memorial service to celebrate and honour
Mom’s life will be held at a later date at the Anglican
Parish of Christ Church, Amherst. Burial service will take place at St
John’s Anglican Church in Milton PEI.
Donations may be made to the Anglican
Parish of Christ Church Amherst, St John’s Anglican Church
PEI, the Lillian Allbon Animal Shelter, Amherst N.S or the
CNIB.
