Gertie Friesen 2020

Gertie Friesen, aged 82, went to be with the Lord on May 27, 2020. Left to cherish Gertie’s memory is her loving family: daughter Rhonda (Cam) Sikorsky; grandsons Christopher Sikorsky (Kirstin Meadows) and Brandon Sikorsky (Gina Wright); sisters Mary Guenther and Anne Klassen; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents John and Anne Friesen; brothers John, Jake, Henry, Peter, Abe, David, and Neil; and three babies in infancy.
Gertie was born on a farm outside of Aberdeen on October 15, 1937. She was the second youngest of thirteen children. She helped around the farm as a child, and her favourite chore was milking the cows. When Gertie was a young girl, her family moved to Warman. She had fond memories of walking on stilts and playing sports when she was younger, and enjoyed trying new things. She later raised her daughter Rhonda in Saskatoon and lovingly babysat other children when Rhonda was young.
She cherished her family, and spent much of her time with them. Rhonda could always count on her Mom. You could often find Gertie in the kitchen baking – it was one of her favourite things to do. She was famous for her cinnamon buns.
Gertie was also a talented guitar player and singer, and even wrote a few original songs. Her love for music inspired her grandsons Christopher and Brandon to learn guitar. They credit her inspiration and support for much of their musical success over the years.
She was a devout Christian and had expressed that she felt close to the Lord. One of her favourite Scriptures was Psalm 23: “The Lord is My Shepherd”.
The family wishes to thank the staff on the seventh floor at St. Paul’s Hospital for caring for Gertie.
Donations in memory of Gertie may be made to Heart + Stroke Foundation of Canada (110-1525 Carling Avenue, Ottawa, ON, K1Z 8R9) or Crohn’s and Colitis Canada (600-60 St. Clair Avenue East, Toronto, ON, M4T 1N5).
